  2. Ghetto In former times, an area in European towns in which the Jewish population was forced to live. Holocaust A systematic extermination of European Jews, Romany people, Slavs, intellectuals, political dissidents, and others by the Nazis and their allies in World War II. 3. Exterminate To kill or destroy somebody or something completely. Crematorium A building or furnace where bodies are incinerated.

  3. Scapegoat Someone who is made to take the blame for others. Stereotype An oversimplified standardized image or idea held by one person or group of another. Anti-Semitism Policies, views, or actions that harm or discriminate against Jewish people. Aryan A Nazi ideal. White people of non-Semitic descent regarded as racially superior. Kristallnacht “Night of Broken Glass” Nazis attack Jewish homes, businesses, and synagogues. Approximately 100 die.

  4. Genocide The systematic killing of all the people from an ethnic, national, or religious group or an attempt to do this. Atrocities A shockingly cruel act, especially an act of wanton violence (random without reason) against an enemy during wartime. Zionist A supporter of the state of Israel. Intifada The Palestinian uprising in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip in 1987, protesting the continued Israeli occupation.

  5. The Final Solution The plan to systematically murder all the Jews of Europe, conceived and put into action by the Nazis during World War II. The Star of David A symbol of the Jewish faith and of the state of Israel. Prejudice Unfoundedhatred, fear, or mistrust of a person or group (religious, ethnic, national, or social) based on insufficient knowledge. Guerrilla A member of an irregular paramilitary unit, operating In small groups, whose objective is revolution and governmental overthrow.

  6. Diaspora The exile and dispersion of the Jews from Palestine following the Babylonian and Roman conquests.

  7. Terms Nuremburg Laws Laws passed by the Nazi Party in 1935 which denied German citizenship to Jews and prevented them from marrying non Jews. It also ordered Jews to wear the Star of David on their clothing so they would be instantly recognized. Nuremburg Trials An International Military Tribunal, consisting of 23 countries, conducted the trials (1945-46). They charged 22 Nazi leaders with “crimes against humanity” and hung 10 of the leaders and burned their bodies in a concentration camp.

  8. The Balfour Declaration This was issued by the British in 1917. The British supported the creation of a Jewish state as long as the rights of the Palestinian people were protected. Suez Crisis of 1956 Egyptian President Nasser sent troops to take over the Suez Canal. He was upset because the British did not provide him with financial support in the building of the Aswan Dam. Great Britain, Israel, and France defeated Egypt. The US and USSR forced them to return land taken and the canal back to Egypt. Palestinian Liberation Organization In 1964, this group came into being, under Yasser Arafat, to promote a Palestinian state. (guerrillas)

  9. The Six Day War (1967) Nasser and other Arab leaders prepare to attack Israel. Israel attacks first, overpowering the Egyptian, Syrian, Jordanian, and Iranian armies. Israel wins the West bank, Golan Heights, Sinai Peninsula, and the city of Jerusalem. The Yom Kippur War 1973 The Arabs attack Israel. A cease-fire was signed several weeks later. 8. Camp David Accords 1979 This was signed between Israel and Egypt. Egypt recognized Israel’s right to exist and Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt.

  10. Oslo Peace Accords 1993 Israel agreed to give the Palestinians self rule in the West bank and Gaza Strip, starting with Jericho. Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948 This was developed as a result of the major atrocities of World War II. It set human rights standards for all nations, listing specific rights that every human being should have. Groups like Amnesty International have worked to increase awareness of human rights violations.
