US Isolationism • The US continued the isolationist policies begun after World War I • These policies were strengthened as war loomed in Europe • Congress passed the Neutrality Acts • Outlawed arms sales to any country at war or engaged in a civil war • Outlawed loans to any country at war or engaged in a civil war

Germany begins expanding • In 1938, Hitler began conquering neighboring lands with German-speaking populations • German troops entered Austria unopposed • Germany threatened Czechoslovakia and gained part of it through negotiation • Neville Chamberlain, Prime Minister of Britain, pushed the policy of appeasement (giving concessions in order to prevent war • Gave Germany the Sudetenland, a part of Czechoslovakia that bordered Germany and had a large population of German speakers
