  3. Newsroom Employment Census • There are about 38,000 full-time daily newspaper journalists in the U.S., down from 40,600 last year. • Of the 38,000, about 4,700 or 12.37 percent are racial minorities. Minority employment in daily newspapers has been above 12 percent since 2002.

Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri. • ASNE's initial survey in 1978 revealed that minority journalists comprised 3.95 percent of the total newsroom workforce. ASNE's goal is to have the percentage of minorities working in newsrooms nationwide match the percentage of minorities in the nation's population by 2025.

  13. ASNE Minority Leadership Institute • Goals: Train and develop up-and-coming mid-level newsroom leaders and connect minority newsroom leaders with a network of established ASNE leaders.

The second was held in conjunction with this convention and was funded by API.

The second was held in conjunction with this convention and was funded by API. • Sessions are planned for the NABJ (Orlando, Fla.) and NAHJ (Anaheim, Calif.) conventions later this summer. The Scripps Howard Foundation will fund these.

The Scripps Howard Foundation will fund these. • About 70 new leaders will go through the institute in its first year of existence.
