  2. Definition • strategy used when conducting studies that involve a large population • complex form of cluster sampling (diving the population into groups) • one or more groups are chosen at random and random people within the chosen groups are sampled.

  3. Process • First Stage - Large groups/clusters are selected - Groups contain more population than required for the final sample • Second Stage - Smaller groups of population are chosen from the chosen cluster • Process of choosing populations within units continues until final sample is achieved

  4. Example • Researchers in Nigeria used multistage sampling to survey the teachers living there on their attitudes and opinions towards adolescent food and nutrition education. The first stage was a simple random selection of 20 high schools in the region. The second stage was randomly selecting 13 teachers from each of those 20 schools who were then interviewed and given questionnaires.
