  2. Fig. 1-4 Kit #1

  3. Basic Design Question • As types of work coordination become established how do organizations allocate work to individuals and work units?

  4. How do managers group individuals into working units? • 1) Group individuals based on knowledge or skill • 2) Group individuals based on time • day shift, night shift etc. • 3) Groups organized by product • production lines for hand soap vs. laundry detergent • 4) Groups established around customers or clients • 5) Groupings around place or geography • 6) Grouping by process: • Customer service • Delivery • Creating different groupings provides benefits of specialization • creates the problem of coordination and control • Suboptimization - an emphasis on achieving unit goals rather than an overall mission. • Mintzberg

  5. How Do We Then Overcome Sub-optimization?

  6. Vertical Coordination • Hierarchy of Authority-linking individuals efforts together done through “THE BOSS” • Rules, Policies and operating procedures - limit discretion and help ensure predictability and uniformity • Planning and Control Systems - enhance management's ability to control of performance outcomes

  7. Lateral Coordination • Direct Contact • Managers meets face-to-face to coordinate unit activities • Team Meetings (permanent) • Permanents committees gather to make coordinating decisions • Task Forces (temporary) • Task forces assemble when new problems or opportunities require collaboration of a number of different functions • Coordinating or LiasonRoles or Departments • Arise and persuasion and negotiation to help others integrate their work

  8. ALLOCATION AND COORDINATION ALSO DEPENDS ON….. • THE ENVIRONMENT • 4 Types of Environments • Lead to 5 STRUCTURES
