  8. Sociology is... • The study of modern human social behavior as a group (psychology – individual) • The sociological perspective focuses on the group not the individual • Young men join gangs because they have been taught by their society to be “masculine” • A young man joins a gang to prove his toughness

  9. Sociological Perspectives • To be able to examine a • social situation using all • three theories is best • (gives best understanding) Sociology has THREE major theories (each has its own followers)…AH AH AHHHH!

  10. Theory 1: Functionalism • Emphasizes the contributions made by each part of society (ex. Family, religion, economics) • Everyone in society has a function in which they seek to fulfill • Societies tend to turn towards a state of stability

  11. Theory 1: Functionalism • Manifest Functions: Intended and recognized consequences • Latent Functions: Unintended and unrecognized consequences • Dysfunction:Negative consequences

  12. Theory 2: Conflict Theory • Emphasizes conflict and competition (Opposite of Functionalism) • Groups compete to preserve and promote their own special values and interests • ______________ vs. ___________

  13. Theory 2: Conflict Theory • As the balance of power shifts in society, change occurs • POWER = The ability to control the behavior of others Women’s movement is shifting power between men and women

  14. Theory 3: Symbolic Interactionism • SYMBOL: anything that stands for something else and has an agreed-upon meaning. • We learn the meaning of symbols by watching others • We use learned meanings to help us imagine how others are going to respond to the same symbol and base our actions accordingly • Our behavior is influenced by the meanings of symbols (attract or avoid certain symbols)

  15. Theory 3: Symbolic Interactionism What is the symbol? What do you think of seeing this symbol?What/who would you expect to see with this symbol?Where might you see this symbol? How might you behave because of this symbol?

  16. Sociological Perspective • Identify the perspective you’ve been assigned and write down the definition • Choose an article that you believe reflects that sociological perspective and read it. • Write down the title of the article. • Write a minimum five line summary about the article. • Highlight/Underline the part of your response that clearly identifies your ‘sociological perspective.’ • Write a 3 line response expressing your opinion on the issue. • 1 POINT FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT CHECK AT END OF CLASS

  17. Sociological Perspective • FUNCTIONALISM • “Outlawing Too Skinny” • This article is about how Israel is dealing with the issue of eating disorders in their country. Their government passed a law banning the use of stick thin models on runways and ads. The government hopes this law will change attitudes about beauty in their country. Advertising companies will now have to think twice about what image they are selling. • I think this is an interesting idea as a way to combat eating disorders. I wonder if a law like this would ever get passed in the United States. I think many would feel it’s not the government’s function to institute such a law.

  18. “Sociological Imagination” • Read pg 11 about sociological imagination • Define the term in your notes • Write in your notes one reason why “SI” is important in sociology. • Write a minimum 3 line example of using sociological imagination in your life.

  19. Growing Up Online Use each of the 3 sociological perspectives as it relates to the video’s topic. How would each perspective view the issue of “growing up online?” • Functionalist - _______________________________________ _____________________________________________________ Extra Credit – Identify a manifest, latent, and dysfunction of this perspective at the bottom of the page! • Conflict - ___________________________________________ _______________________________________________________ • Symbolic Interaction - _______________________________ _______________________________________________________
