Perspective. The creation of depth and volume on a flat surface. Size and Vertical Location. We perceive objects that are higher on the page and smaller as being further away than objects which are in the forefront of the picture. Overlapping.

  3. Size and Vertical Location We perceive objects that are higher on the page and smaller as being further away than objects which are in the forefront of the picture

  4. Overlapping When an object is covered up by another object, we perceive it as being behind. We do not perceive the object as being incomplete.

  5. Atmospheric Perspective Objects which are further away are blurry. Objects which are closer appear to be clear and sharp.

  6. Linear Perspective

  7. Linear Perspective is based on the idea that receding lines will meet at a common point on the horizon

  8. The concept of perspective was developed during the Italian Renaissance

  9. Artists became interested in depicting the natural world around them. The Renaissance lasted from c1400 to c1600

  10. Before the Renaissance, in the Middle Ages, most paintings depicted heavenly figures worshipping Christ. The backgrounds in these paintings was usually gold

  11. The Renaissance marked a huge leap forward in artists ability to show naturalism and depth in paintings and sculpture.

  12. M. C. Escher was a Dutch artist who loved to play with the theory of linear perspective in order to create visual puzzles.
