  1. STARTING SYSTEM Function: Bring the engine to cranking r.p.m. (200rpm) so the engine can draw fuel and air and ignite that fuel and air.

  2. Starter Principles Video

  3. Construction (PARTS) • Casing • Drive housing • End cap • Armature • Brushes • Drive • Bushings • Solenoid • Drive fork • Return spring

  4. Construction Video

  5. Parts Pole shoe type • Four pole shoes • Four field windings • Fords movable pole shoe • One pole shoe is moveable • Contact disc • Return spring • Plunger

  6. Pole shoe Video

  7. SOLENOIDS • Types: • Positive engagement • Solenoid Actuated

  8. Function: • Engage starter drive* • Supply current to starter • Disengage the current and drive *not on moveable pole shoe type

  9. Construction • Pull in windings(large) • Hold in windings • Plunger • Return spring • Contact disc

  10. Solenoid Video

  11. Wind types • Series • Shunt (parallel) • Compound (series/parallel)

  12. Starter drives • Function: • Provide for a positive engagement with the ring gear. • Protect the armature from prolonged engagement.

  13. Starter Drive Video

  14. Starter Armature • Function: Is the moving part of a starter motor. The armature uses an EMF to push and pull itself

  15. Commutator Purpose: The commutator is on the armature, it is used to switch the current paths though the armature windings so that the armature always bends the “Lines of Flux” (carrot in front of the donkey)
