  1. Starting soon! You’ve joined the IST Friday a.m. webinar for Synchronous Web Conferencing/Collaboration We’ll be starting the session shortly. IST Friday a.m. seminar, 8 May 2009

  2. Synchronous Web Conferencing/Collaboration A project to investigate a campus service Presenters: David Bean (DCE), Andrea Chappell (IST), KoorusBookan (IST)

  3. Taking part in this ePresence session • Note the text box to add comments and questions • To ask questions • We suggest posting to “public” • Koorus is our moderator • Break at 10 - 15 minutes into the session for questions, and also address them at the end • The session will be available to review later IST Friday a.m. seminar, 8 May 2009

  4. What we’ll present • What we mean by “Synchronous Web Conferencing and Collaboration” services • Key differentiating characteristics of these systems • Project objectives (as drafted so far) • Two systems in use on campus: • ePresence (used for today’s “webinar”) • Adobe Connect • Information from you! IST Friday a.m. seminar, 8 May 2009

  5. What are “Synchronous Web Conferencing/Collaboration” services? • “Synchronous” – participants are on the system at the same time (presenting, asking questions, etc.). • “Web conferencing” – generally, a presentation (data, audio, video combination) is made from one location to many viewers who have limited interaction with each other and the presenter, perhaps through a text facility (e.g., today’s ePresence session). • “Web conferencing with collaboration” – as above but interactions are flexible, with participants having more equal footing, e.g., able to share presenting across locations, share desktops. IST Friday a.m. seminar, 8 May 2009

  6. Main differentiating characteristics (as we know them so far) IST Friday a.m. seminar, 8 May 2009

  7. Show desktop • The presenter has shown PowerPoint slides • Now we’ll show the desktop which could include … • Another application • A web page • A whiteboard • Etc. IST Friday a.m. seminar, 8 May 2009

  8. Some popular products • Elluminate • Adobe Acrobat Connect (used at UW) • Wimba Live Classroom (UW uses Wimba Voice Tools) • Tegrity Campus • ePresence (open source, used at UW) • Microsoft Live Meeting (initial use in UW CECS project) • WebEx (only as a hosted service) • DimDim (has an open source version) IST Friday a.m. seminar, 8 May 2009

  9. Some related products • Video conferencing systems (e.g., Tandberg systems) • Two way video, audio, with presentation materials • Focus on the visual presence and personal interactions between individuals or groups • Can have collaboration tools, like desktop sharing • Streaming systems (e.g., vBrick) • One way video, audio, presentation materials • Focus on visual presence (?) • One to many IST Friday a.m. seminar, 8 May 2009

  10. Project objective (DRAFT) • Provide a campus service for web conferencing and collaboration ... • that is aligned with related campus directions, • with needs identified through input from campus groups and individuals, and • that satisfies as many diverse needs as is reasonable, without diluting most significant, to prevent proliferation of separately operated services. • Support will be defined as part of the project, as will be “fit” to other products. IST Friday a.m. seminar, 8 May 2009

  11. Installed at UW: Adobe Connect • (Formerly Breeze) • Distance Education (via AHS Connect server) • Masters of Public Health (One day events) • Alumni Affairs (Hosted) • International business meetings • One-on-one and training sessions for CECS • online Masters of Management Science • In conjunction with Groove for Synchronous classrooms IST Friday a.m. seminar, 8 May 2009

  13. Information from you • Are you interested in such a service? (If ePresence, offered live “polling” we could get this info now!) • What uses do you have for such a service (for academic courses, for training, for research collaborations, meetings, etc.)? • What features do you foresee needing for your uses? • Are you aware of other instances of systems set up at UW, or of other users of external services? IST Friday a.m. seminar, 8 May 2009
