  2. Said but didn’t do. Matthew 23:1-3 • Acts 15:10 Now therefore, why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? • Mark 10:42-45

  3. Did works to be seen of men. Matthew 23:4-12 • Matthew 6:1-2 • Matthew 6:5 “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. • Matthew 6:16 “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

  4. Prevented others from entering the kingdom. Matthew 23:13 “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. • Luke 11:52 “Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in you hindered.”

  5. Defrauded widows Matthew 23:14 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.

  6. Corrupted converts. Matthew 23:15 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.

  7. Covetous and Foolish Matthew 23:16-22 Concerned with gold and offerings instead of what sanctified them.

  8. Not concerned with keeping all of the Law. Matthew 23:23-24 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. 24 Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

  9. Concerned with appearance and not the inner man. Matthew 23:25-28 Hearts remained unchanged.

  10. Agreed with their fathers who had killed the prophets. Matthew 23:29-33 They make claims to be different than their fathers, but they lie.

  11. Rejected the truth of God Matthew 23:34-36 • Acts 7:51 You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you. • 2 Chronicles 36:15-16

  12. Wrong attitude toward the lost Luke 15 v. 1-2 Then all the tax collectors and the sinners drew near to Him to hear Him. 2 And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, “This Man receives sinners and eats with them.”

  13. Rejected the counsel of God Luke 7:30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the will of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.

  14. Valued tradition more than truth Matthew 15:1-9 Mark 7:8-9

  15. Matthew 5:20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.
