  2. Who are the Sadducees? • From the second temple period (150 B.C.E.-70C.E.) • High Priests; Elite group • Opposed to Pharisees and oral law

  3. Who are the Sadducees? (cont.) • “Bratty” people who are pro written law • Didn’t believe in afterlife • Most important for them was rituals involving the temple

  4. What did they believe? • Stuck to the five books of torah only • Anti Rabbinic Judaism – called Pharisees at the time • Followed the Hebrew Bible according to the plain meaning of text

  5. Sadducees today • Disappeared after destruction of the second temple • Speculated that Karaites are spiritual descendents of the Sadducees – because they also accept torah only. • Lots of writings about them have disappeared

  6. Who were the Pharisees? • Common people of the time • Were pro oral law • Rabbinic Judaism came from them • Written law was open to interpretation

  7. Pharisees cont. • Also were the Maccabees • Second temple period • We are descended from them • G-d gave Moses the knowledge of the torah • Started the knowledge that created the talmud

  8. Shift • Poor Jews thought that riches and temple wasn’t the important stuff • They thought that prayer and study was more important • When the temple was destroyed, Pharisees prevailed
