  1. VLSI SIGNAL PROCESSING BEECE 705T Nagpur Uni. Prof. S. S. Limaye

  2. Application Areas of DSP Image Processing Instrumentation/Control Speech/Audio Military Pattern recognition spectrum analysis speech recognition secure communications Robotic vision noise reduction speech synthesis radar processing Image enhancement data compression text to speech sonar processing Facsimile position and rate digital audio missile guidance animation control equalization Telecommunications Biomedical Consumer applications Echo cancellation patient monitoring cellular mobile phones Adaptive equalization scanners UMTS ADPCM trans-coders EEG brain mappers digital television Spread spectrum ECG Analysis digital cameras Video conferencing X-Ray storage/enhancement internet phone etc.

  3. Implementation of DSP systems A tradeoff between microcontroller, DSP, FPGA and ASIC technologies Parameters • Area, speed, power, NRE cost, dev. Time • Microcontroller for simple apps • DSP for heavy number crunching • FPGA for ASIC proto and low volume • ASIC for high MIPS and large volumes

  4. Course objectives Course objectives • The course on DSP teaches you what to design. The course on Digital System Design teaches you how to implement it in VHDL. This course teaches you how best to implement. • At the end of this course, students will be able to build real time systems that are optimized in terms of area, power and speed by applying various methodologies like pipelining, parallel processing, folding, unfolding and algorithm transformation.

  5. Importance of course • Very essential if you plan to enter VLSI design industry. • Very essential if you plan to pursue PG in VLSI

  6. Course syllabus • Course consists of 6 units • 1 Pipelining and parallel processing • 2 Retiming • 3 Unfolding • 4 Folding • 5 Fast convolution (Cook toom & Winograd) • 6 Cyclic and iterated convolution Prerequisites – Digital Signal Processing Linkages – Digital system design, DSP Processors • Requires analytical abilities

  7. Assessment strategy • 80 marks for university paper • 20 marks internal assessment

  8. Recommended textbook VLSI Digital Signal Processing Systems K. K. Parhi Wiley Lecture notes will be made available at www.limayesir.wordpress.com Handwritten notes will be made available for copying
