  5. GCOS “Reference” Upper AIR Network (GRUAN) Illustration of the initial set of 15 sites composing the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) Reference Upper Air Network (GRUAN). Each site provides one or more reference radiosonde observation per week along with specified ancillary ground (lidar, MWR, FTIR …) observations. A reference observation in the context of GRUAN includes adherence to best measurement practices as specified in the GRUAN Manual and Measurement Guidelines including specification of measurement and product uncertainty. Expansion of GRUAN to up to 40 sites within the next five year is planned.
