Manufacturing Industry Workforce Overview • Poor (erroneous) public image • Dying sector with few jobs and no career path • Dirty environment, low skilled work • Boring – no challenge • Low pay • Aging workforce • Need lots of new entrants just to keep pace with attrition, even if the total workforce shrinks due to productivity improvements • Off-shore competition provides abundance of labor

Workforce Strategies / Results • Workforce Training Funds • Received 4 grants since 1995 worth $160,000 • 180 people trained in: • Lean manufacturing training • Supervisory training • Technical skills development • ESL, math education • Developed in house skills matrix and corresponding documentation to raise the level of skill across the organization

Partnerships Formed / Results • Voc-Tech Schools • Sit on Advisory boards – able to provide input to curriculum development to meet demands of today • Hire co-op students • Have hired several graduates – two just last week • National Robotics League (part of the NTMA) • Sponsor local teams • Provide materials and assist with the manufacturing • Students exposed to the industry and the skills required to be successful

  12. Partnerships Formed / Results • E-Team Machinist Training Program • Founder and Advisory Board member • Program has graduated over 250 entry level machinists • BC has hired over 10 graduates • North Shore Community College • Working to develop a manufacturing technician degree program
