  1. Geoscience, Student Ambassadors and the Local Community Professor Richard Gottfried Frederick Community College

  2. Background • Modeled after Engineering program success • Students in program return to their high schools and work as tutors and mentors • We are in the process of developing a website that will connect interested high school students with the Engineering program at Frederick CC. • Frederick is the only public institution of higher ed in the County. The two 4-year colleges are private institutions with limited geosciences courses.

  3. GeoscienceConnection • We have used the same idea for the Geosciences • Examples: 1) Students from PC 114 and PC 115 (the required AAT courses) serve as tutors and mentors in the local schools. This experience has encouraged FCPS students to attend Frederick CC while expanding experiences in the Geosciences for these students . (Note: some AAT students also student teach at these schools.) 2) Frederick CC geoscience or AAT students serve as student advisors for FCPS science fair (mainly middle school) 3) Students in the above PC classes must complete a one-week lesson plan. Implementation in FCPS is encouraged and supported. 4) Frederick CC holds Kids On Campus twice a year. I do several activities with these students. Many have later come to FCC to take one of the geoscience courses.

  4. More Examples Students who have taken Honors Physical Geology or Historical Geology have developed projects that have impacted their communities. Examples 1) Student researched and designed a successful watershed remediation project for the town of Brunswick. Several students from Brunswick subsequently took the Honors section and develped local projects as well. 2) Student developed a Geologic Walking Tour of the City of Frederick (More of a building stones project.) 3) Several students have performed cultural and geological inventories of several properties within the County. Some of these have gone back to the 1700’s. Two have been presented at conferences.

  5. Some Data Geoscience Courses at Frederick CC • PC 103 Introduction to Physical Science (3) • PC 104 Introduction to Oceanography (3) • PC 106 Introduction to Meteorology (4) • PC 107 Introduction to Astronomy (4) • PC 108 Physical Geology (4) • PC 109 Historical Geology (4) • PC 115 Introduction to Geoscience (AAT course) (4) • PC 121 Energy and Society (3)
