Components of Fitness. The components of fitness help us to determine the areas of our fitness that need to be developed. All sports require different combinations of components of fitness and it is vital that we have a specific understanding of what we wish to improve.

  1. Components of Fitness • The components of fitness help us to determine the areas of our fitness that need to be developed. • All sports require different combinations of components of fitness and it is vital that we have a specific understanding of what we wish to improve.

  2. Aerobic Capacity (Cardiovascular Fitness; Aerobic Fitness; Cardiorespiratory Fitness) • This affects the ability to do moderately strenuous activity over a period of time. It reflects how well your circulatory and respiratory systems work together to supply oxygen to your body. • Eg’s – open water swimmer, marathon runner

  3. Anaerobic Capacity • The ability to produce energy without using oxygen. • The greater the efficiency of the ATP-PC and LA systems, the greater the athletes anaerobic power. • Eg’s – 100m sprint Repeated sprint efforts Pole vault

  4. Muscular Strength • Exerting a maximal force in one maximal effort. • Eg’s – Olympic weight lifting

  5. Muscular Speed • The ability to move the whole body, or a body part, from one point to another in the shortest possible time. • Eg’s – Sprinting, Long jump

  6. Muscular Power • The ability to combine strength with speed to achieve an explosive movement. • Eg’s – javelin, shot-put, discuss, jumping

  7. Muscular Endurance • The ability to hold a particular position for a sustained period of time, or repeat a movement many times without rest. • Eg’s – Rowing; Cycling (2hrs +)

  8. Agility • The ability to change direction quickly and accurately whilst moving rapidly. • Eg’s – dodging (soccer, netball etc).

  9. Flexibility • The ability to move your joints – to bend, stretch and twist body parts readily. • Eg’s – Ballet, Gymnastics, Diving
