  2. What is Perimeter? • Perimeter is the distance around something, like a fence.

  3. To Find the Perimeter • Add all the sides together to find the perimeter. 8 cm 3 cm 3 cm 8 cm 22 cm 8 cm + 8 cm + 3 cm + 3 cm =

  4. Remember to Label Your Answer! • Look at the unit that the object is being measured in. • Label your answer with the same unit.

  11. How Would You Solve This One? 6 ft.

  12. 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = or 6 X 4 = 24 ft.

  13. You Can Find the Perimeter of Everyday Objects… • A basketball court is one example: 28 m 15 m

  14. And the Perimeter of the Basketball Court Is… 15 + 15 + 28 + 28 = 86 m !

  15. What is Area? • The amount of surface inside a shape; measured in square units.

  16. To Find the Area: 8 sq. cm. One way is to count up the squares.

  17. Another Way to Find the Area: 4 units 4 X 4 = 16 sq. units

  18. Try Another: • 2 units • 6 units 6 X 2 = 12 sq. units

  19. Find the Area… 8 ft • 5 ft 8 X 5 = 40 ft2

  20. Remember… • Perimeter is the distance AROUND something. • Area is the amount of surface INSIDE a shape.
