SAOG unites Ob/Gyns of Sakhalin Oblast SAOG Objectives: • Work with medical personnel (professional education, introduction of new technologies, IEC materials development, etc.) • Raise public awareness • Work with government (participation in development public health policies, joint projects) • Work with mass media

  3. Map of Sakhalin and Kuril Islands Population of the region – 536,000 Sakhalin Region covers 87,100 square kilometers

  4. Sakhalin • Located on 59 islands • Length –948 km • Kuril ridge – 1200 km • There are more than 1,000 rivers, 7,000 lakes, and 39 active volcanoes

  5. 25% of Sakhalin Oblast population is living in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk City • CC incidence rate – 16 per 100,000 of population • 14% cases are diagnosed at late stages (last 5 years) • Mortality – 6 per 100,000 • 35% of diagnosed cases die within first year (last 3 years)

  6. Within the frame of the project, Sakhalin State University conducted survey with 699 women Respondents by age: < 16 5,2% (36) 17-20 11,6% (81) 21-30 26,4% (185) 31-40 20.6 (144) 41-50 21,2 (148) > 50 15% (105)

  7. Questions for women: • What clinic do you go to see Ob/Gyn? • How easy it is to access the service? • Do you know how often you should see Ob/Gyn? • How often do you see Ob/Gyn?

  8. Questions for women:(continued) • What is colposcopy? • What causes CC? • What are the obstacles for early diagnostic of CC? • Do you need information on CC prevention? If yes, what information do you need and what are the best ways to deliver this information?

  9. In-Depth Interviews with Medical Providers • 30 Ob/Gyns • 7 midwives, practiced independently at obstetrician stations, station hospitals, and policlinic • 7 laboratory assistants working with PAP-smears

Questions for medical providers: • What do you think about CC problem? • Why do you think CC incidence rate is so high? • What needs to be done? • Are you satisfied with existing recommendations on CC prevention? • Is information on CC prevention accessible for women? • Do women need this information and in what form?

  11. Women Survey Results: • Majority of women go for services to women’s consultations or polyclinics – 65.7% • 13.7% go to private doctors • 3.4% do not visit doctors at all • Because of doctors’ overload, it is difficult for 30% of women to see Ob/Gyn

  12. Women Survey Results:(continued) • 71.9% of respondents do not know what is colposcopy • 76% don’t know about reasons for CC • Only 25.5% of women know how often they should see Ob/Gyn • Only 20% of respondents follow this rule

Women Survey Results:(continued) • 75% of women need information on CC prevention • Most important informational recourses – mass media and doctors • Majority of respondents (INDEPENDENT OF AGE) think that it is necessary to organize a specialized сenter on CC problems in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk City

  14. Medical providers: reasons for high CC incidence rate are: • High rate of STIs, especially HPV • Low awareness of population on CC prevention and neglectful attitude to their own health • Medical offices and laboratories are not equipped properly • Doctors’ work overload

  15. Conclusions: It’s necessary : • To develop strategy to decrease CC rate • To organize systematic provision of information for population on CC prevention • To organize Center on cc problems • To develop recommendations on CC treatment and distribute among doctors

Project Results: • Recommendations for CC prevention – the Department of Health of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk City • The agreement with the newspaper “ Be Healthy” to publish a series of articles for population on CC prevention • Health educational center in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk City – in the stage of establishment • SAOG developed an algorithm on CC patient care

  17. Lessons Learned: • It is necessary to join efforts of all interested parties (medical institutions of different forms, NGOs, and health administration) • It is necessary to use mass media more actively to deliver to the government authorities and business representatives the importance of the problem • It is necessary to MOTIVATE our society TO SEE CERVICAL CANCER AS A VERY IMPORTANT ISSUE
