  1. F. Savary / TE-MSC-LMF 11 T Dipole Project Cold mass integration status & plan

  2. Outline • Cold mass assembly • Short term plan • Status • Tooling • Short term plan • Status • Staffing Cold mass integration status and plans

  3. Cold Mass Assembly Cold mass integration status and plans

  4. Short term plan • “Short term” means objectives for end 2013 • Develop a functional specification • 2 months for a draft • Develop a conceptual design • Byend 2013 • 3D models, a few 2D sections showing the main size, the main sub-assemblies (Assembly Breakdown Structure), and the maininterfaces • Develop a detailed plan for the construction and test of (a) prototype(s), aiming at final technical specification for IT for series production • Schedule • Cost • Staffing • Tooling • Components Cold mass integration status and plans

  5. Functional specification • Description of the 11 T dipole magnet • Description of the functional requirements • Field strength • Field quality • … • Definition of the physical/functional interfaces • Space contraints • Interface with cryogenics (heat exchanger tube, cooling requirements), vacuum (beam pipe, beam screen?, …), physics (correctors, aperture, meaning e.g. straightness, …), power supply, protection, cryostat, collimator, neighbor magnet, … Cold mass integration status and plans

  6. Status • So far, nothing done … at least not significant enough to be mentioned Cold mass integration status and plans

  7. After short term plan • We need a conceptual design review to initiate the final design and engineering phase • Needs to cover, and be consistent with • First results of short model program • Integration design, taking into account all interfaces • In March 2014? Cold mass integration status and plans

  8. Tooling Cold mass integration status and plans

  9. Short term plan • Winding machine • End January 2014 to start winding trials on racetrack, then cos(θ) coil with bare Cu-cable, and then first practice coil with insulated Cu-cable to react and impregnate (Mikko) • Short welding press • Next week, welding of the first mechanical mock-up • Reaction furnace • Contract launched (company GERO) • Delivery scheduledend March 2014 • Impregnation chamber • IT-3898/TE launched • Deadline for bidding on 21-06-2013 • Design winding mandrel, molds for binder curing, and for coil heat treatment Cold mass integration status and plans

  10. Status – Welding press • Company EWM • to sent report on welding tests carried out at their premises • to come @ CERN next week to weld the mock-up, with equipment Cold mass integration status and plans

  11. Status winding machine • Design work on-going (EN-MME) • Integrate 2nd spool holder • Make it shorter (with possible return to longer configuration) • Revamp control system • Company CERATEC (contract needs to be placed, offer received last week) Cold mass integration status and plans

  12. Staffing Cold mass integration status and plans

  13. Staffing plan • Currently • CERN staff, 2 CpC, 1 fellow + 1CpE part time soon • FSU, (very) limited contribution • EN-MME design office • Soon • Service contracts (FC next week) • Alstom as from September 2013 • Babcock Noell as from January 2014 • ASG Superconductor as from May 2015 • Later (after LS1, July/August 2014) • LMF staff, and FSU Cold mass integration status and plans

  14. Service contracts Cold mass integration status and plans
