  2. Welcome to Year 4 Mrs Devereaux – 4D Mr Hiscock – 4H Teaching Assistants : Mrs Lauder and Mrs Roberts

  3. Year 4 Themes Theme in Autumn Term – The Holiday Show – Geography and History Focus. • Other themes in Year 4 include: • Inventions and Discoveries • The Second World War with an Evacuation Day • Survival – residential • Saving The World

  4. Year 4 • Transition from Year 3. • Handover from Year 3 teachers. • High expectations for work and behaviour in line with school ethos. School code of conduct will form class rules. • STEP System • Values – positive rewards –PSHE • Year 4 are encouraged to become independent and responsible learners.

  5. Pen Licence and Pencil Cases • As with last year the children do not need pencil cases. All pencils and pens will be provided. • Pen licence and handwriting support. • Maths still to be completed in pencil.

  6. Curriculum English and MathsBuild upon and extend learning from Year 3. Sometimes these subjects may be linked to our themes. Mr Hiscock – Extension group, Mrs Devereaux –Support group for maths – same coverage at different pace to suit children. We will swap every half term. Speedy maths will take place daily GHASP Activities such as grammar, spelling, comprehension reading, handwriting and punctuation will be taught. Spelling Encourage children to apply spellings in writing. Children will focus on Year 4 word list and own individual words.

  7. Curriculum R.E Focus on Christianity and Hinduism in Y4. If anyone would like to come and talk to the children about these religions please let your child’s teacher know. Computing Using laptops and ipads– E-Safety and searching using the internet. Tablet skills. Science Light and Shadows – link to Holiday Show Geography Linked to our holiday/ Ancient Egyptian theme. Holiday brochures/pictures from holidays etc. Spanish Numbers, colours and greetings. Taught by Mrs Cater. Spanish culture as well. As whole school teaching the one MFL across KS2. New A4 books – Maths, English and Discovery Books

  8. Holiday Show • Focus on geographical aspects of holiday destinations – locate on map, look at landscape and climate. Use own experiences. Consider why tourists visit other places. Bring in postcards and brochures from own holidays.(Compulsory homework task). • Focus on history – location of Egypt then Ancient Egypt. Thematic approach. Wherever possible links will be made across other subjects for example – recounts of archaeological discoveries, ICT – researching weather patterns.

  9. Water Bottles/Toilet • Children may bring in a water bottle with a sports cap. Must be clearly labelled and put in class box. Encouraged to drink at appropriate times throughout the day. • Toilet – children strongly encouraged to go at playtimes. • Please let us know if there are medical reasons that require your child to go more often.

  10. Year 4 residential • To be linked to Year 4 new Summer Term topic of “Survival” – activities such as orienteering and woodland survival, woodland cooking and crafts. High Ashurst near Box Hill- tepee accommodation. 3 days- 2nights. • Further presentation and details given closer to the time.

  11. PE/Uniform/Vivos • Children will need to bring in PE kit for outdoor and indoor PE sessions. • 4D/4H PE days Tuesdays and Thursdays–everyday kit in as PE is sometimes on other days. Letter if needs to be excused from PE. • Mrs Garner – School Sports Coach to teach outdoor games. • No jewellery/earrings Surrey County policy. • Smart full school uniform. • Vivos carry over from Year 3 if not already spent.

  12. Theme Day – Ancient Egypt • Tuesday 5th November – Parent helpers please. At least 10 helpers for the day. We need help all day ideally. • Children come dressed as an Ancient Egyptian for the day. Adults in costumes as well if they can. • Written confirmation that you can help to be given to class teacher please. We need morning and afternoon helpers so please specify when you are able to attend. • Holiday brochure request.
