  3. What is NETIQUETTE? 1. Online ethics 2. The social and moral code of the Internet 3. A philosophy of effective communication

  4. What are the basic netiquette rules? 1. Spell Check a. Correctly spell and proof read all Internet communication 2. Caps a. Do not put words in all caps while communicating online 3. Truth a. Be honest online. 4. Be a truthful online representation a. The person you exude online should mimic your actual persona you exude in reality. 5. Avoid Flaming a. Do not post inappropriate material online.

  5. What are the basic netiquette rules? 6. Avoid Spamming a. Do not sent unsolicited messages online. 7. Conservatism a. Small amount of high quality messages > large amount of low quality messages 8. Avoid Late Messages a. Send emails at appropriate hours increases credibility. 9. Shop Secure Sites Only a. Before you make an online purchase, make sure it’s secure. 10. Use Discretion a. Be cautious in every way online.

  7. What is copyright? • A form of protection a. protects original works of authorship (literary, dramatic, and artistic works) b. does not protect facts, does not protect facts, ideas, systems, or methods of operation

  8. Is my work protected? • Yes, the moment it is in physical form is the moment it is copyrighted.

  10. What is fair use? • 1. Fair Use is a term used to describe how the Copyright Act gives permission to copyright holders to reproduce works for a limited time period.

  12. What is Plagiarism? • Using someone’s work and saying it’s your own • Using someone’s work and not giving information telling where you’ve found it • To use someone’s ideas and saying they’re your own

What kinds of plagiarism are there? • Submitting someone else’s work • Work that includes a significant amount of someone else’s ideas • Changing most words, but still using someone else’s main ideas • Putting someone else’s words in your own words but not giving them credit • Borrowing someone else’s work • Combines your own work and someone else’s without citation • Combines multiple sources in own work without citing sources • Using wrong citations for your work • Correctly cites materials but doesn't’t use own work

  14. How to be safe on the web and online? • Become education on what’s out there. • Think before you act. • Always practice online responsibility. • Become familiar with training programs in your area that will help you understand all aspects on the web.
