  1. Unit 4 Review Main Idea America faced a series of changes during the period of 1820-1860. The spirit of change was driven by a diverse group of people and influences.

  2. Chapter 12 Vocabulary • Know the following terms Jacksonian Democracy Indian Removal Act Indian Territory (in addition please know the states that currently occupy the territory) Trail of Tears (who, what, when, where, why)

  3. Chapter 13 Vocabulary • Know the following terms Manifest Destiny Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (know what the U.S. received)

  4. Chapter 14 Vocabulary • Know the following terms Push/Pull factors Prejudice Nativists Romanticism Transcendentalism Civil Disobedience Underground Railroad Abolition Suffrage

Reformers- Know who and what • Horace Mann- Education Reform • Dorothea Dix- Reformed conditions for the mentally ill • Sojourner Truth- Worked for both abolition causes and women’s rights • Frederick Douglas- Former slave and abolitionist speaker. • Elizabeth Cady Stanton- helped organize the Seneca Falls convention and worked for suffrage for women • Susan B. Anthony- Worked to improve the property rights of women • Harriet Tubman- Underground Railroad conductor

  6. Main Idea (Chapter 12) • How did Jacksonian Democracy bring the government to the people? By promoting the concept of majority rule, which would spread political power to all people.

  7. Main Ideas (Chapter 13) • Manifest Destiny- The U.S. was destine to stretch from “sea to shining sea” • What events helped the United States reach this “destiny”? Mexican Cession (includes present day Nevada, California, Utah, most of Arizona, parts of Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico) Gadsden Purchase • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo- Mexico realized Texas was part of the U.S., Mexican Cession, and the Rio Grande was the border between the U.S. and Mexico

  8. Main Ideas (Chapter 13) • 3 reasons people moved west /Trails that ran west 1. Profit (Santé Fe Trail) 2. Cheap and vast amount of land (Oregon Trail) 3. Religious Tolerance (Mormon Trail)

Main Ideas (Chapter 14) Push Factors • Population Growth (European cities were over crowded) • Agricultural Changes (large farms pushed tenants of land) • Crop Failures (Irish Potato Famine) • Industrial Revolution (Artisans lost jobs and emigrated to find work) • Religious/ Political Turmoil ( Quakers left Norway and many Germans fled after a failed revolution in 1848) Pull Factors • Freedom • Economic Opportunity • Abundant Land

  10. What caused a spirit of reform to sweep the United States? The Second Great Awakening (religious revival in the 1790’s) was the catalyst that made many Americans want to change what was wrong in society. Reforms included • Temperance movement • Help for the needy and mentally ill • Education reform • Workers rights • Abolition • Suffrage and women’s equality • Fight to create a Utopian society • Why were reforms needed in the areas listed above? • What group was left out of this spirit of reform?
