  1. Calculation of RPF Control Deaths: Select Initial Date Range for Troop Control Area Use a Definition Query to select only those dates from the total daily death by commune layer Use the Select by Location to select the communes whose boundaries “are completely within” the RPF control area Credit RPF for the deaths by copying the upper death values into a newly added RPF column in the Daily Commune Death Attribute Table Select next Date Range for Troop Control Area and repeat…. All analysis run in ArcView GIS Software by ESRI

  2. Setting the Date RangeDefinition Query

  3. Communes within RPF Control Selected Select by location dialog Copy Upper Death Value to RPF Field

  4. Calculation of FRONT Deaths: Select Initial Date Range for Troop Control Area Use a Definition Query to select only those dates from the total daily death by commune layer Use the Select by Location to select the communes whose boundaries “are crossed by the outline of” the RPF control area Credit FRONT for the deaths by copying the upper death values into a newly added FRONT column in the Daily Commune Death Attribute Table Select next Date Range for Troop Control Area and repeat….

  5. Communes Touch the Front

  6. Communes Touch the Front

  7. Calculation of FAR Deaths: Select Initial Date Range for Troop Control Area Use a Definition Query to select only those dates from the total daily death by commune layer Use the Select by Location to select the communes whose boundaries “intersect” (meaning touch in anyway) the RPF control area Select the opposite Communes Credit FAR for the deaths by copying the upper death values into a newly added FAR column in the Daily Commune Death Attribute Table Select next Date Range for Troop Control Area and repeat…. Control Deaths and Front Deaths were also calculated for the French Army

  8. Error Checking: • Since the control areas death credit was calculated manually for FAR / RPF / FRONT / FRENCH and FRENCH FRONT a simple formula was run to assure that all of the above valuesadded up to the total upper death values. • There were 3 instances where they did not. These were due deaths which occurred after the last troop control map which was7/19/1994 • To resolve this the troop areas were frozen from 7/19 through theend of July, and the areas were assigned based on the criteria already described. • Since after this fix all areas are assigned and not duplicated the resultsappear accurate. • REVIEW AND QUALITY CONTROL IS ADVISED
