  2. Lesson # Seventeen Preaching Jesus As Lord And Christ “LOOKING UNTO JESUS” – Our Example In How To Be Humble - Hebrews 12:2

  3. There is no doubt that this characteristic of Christ is clearly evident in His life. • As the son of God amongst men - Christ was truly humble. • The principals of Humility are exemplified by Jesus • Teaches us the essentiality of Humility • And we need to make application of the principals.

  4. Exemplified In Jesus . . . • Essentiality of Humility Taught by Jesus • Making Application -

  5. Vine’s Dictionary of New Testament Words Humble (Adjective and Verb) A-1,Adjective,5011,tapeinos> primarily signifies "low-lying." It is used always in a good sense in the NT, metaphorically, to denote (a) "of low degree, brought low,“ . . . A-2,Adjective,5011 5424,tapeinophron> "humble-minded" (phren, "the mind"), 1Peter 3:8; see COURTEOUS. B-1,Verb,5013,tapeinoo> akin to A, signifies "to make low,"

  6. International Standard Bible Encyclopedia - It by no means implies slavishness or servility; nor is it inconsistent with a right estimate of oneself, one's gifts and calling of God, or with proper self-assertion when called for. But the habitual frame of mind of a child of God is that of one who feels not only that he owes all his natural gifts, etc., to God, but that he has been the object of undeserved redeeming love, and who regards himself as being not his own, but God's in Christ. . . . The humble mind is thus at the root of all other graces and virtues. Self-exaltation spoils everything. . . . (1Cor.13:4).

  7. International Standard Bible Encyclopedia - ‘It is not genuine humility when we humble ourselves with the feeling that we are greater than others, but only when we do not think of self at all. It is not alone the sense of sin that should create the humble spirit: Jesus had no sin. . . . There may be much self-satisfaction where sinfulness is confessed. We may be proud of our humility. It is necessary also always to beware of “the pride that apes humility.”’

  8. Was meek and lowly in heart – Matt. 11:28-30 • He washed the disciples feet – John 13:12-16 • Came to serve – Luke 22:27 • As prophesied – Zec. 9:9; (Matt. 21:5); Isa. 53:7,8; (Act 8:32-35) • Gave His life – Matt 20:28; Mark 10:45; Phil. 2:5-8; Hebrews 2:10-18

  9. Withstood temptation – Matt 4:1-11 • Endured personal wrong – Isa. 53; Matt 26:47-68; 27:1-50 • Spoke with authority – Matt 5:3-7:29; Mark 1:22 • Rebuked false teaching and hypocrisy – Matt. 15:3-12; 23:13-33 • Cleansed the temple – John 2:13-17

  10. The first shall be last & the last first – Matt. 20:25-28; 23:11,12; Luke 14:11; 22:25-27 • Be humble like a child - Matt 18:3-4 • His disciples are to follow His example – John 13:13-17

  11. An essential part of our character – Matt. 5:3; Col. 3:12; 1 Peter 5:5 • Essential to practical Christianity – Rom 6:16,17; 12:9-18; 1 Cor. 13:4; Gal. 6:1 • Essential to obedience, keeping unity & working together – Eph 4:1-6; Phil. 2:1-8 • Essential in perseverance and enduring correction – Heb. 12:1-11

  12. Meekness, gentleness, and humility are fruits of the Spirit. Gal. 5:22-23; Col. 3:12-13; 1 Tim. 6:11; 1 Pet. 5:5-6 • When we are led by the Spirit, we produce the fruits of the Spirit, and not the works of the flesh. Gal. 5:16 • These fruits of the Spirit enable us to accept God’s Word. - James 1:21

  13. These fruits of the Spirit aid us in accepting the chastening of the Lord. • Heb. 12:5-6 - to profit from chastening, we need meekness and humility. • These fruits of the Spirit will help us in teaching someone the truth. 2 Tim. 2:25 ; 1 Pet. 3:15 • These fruits of the Spirit help us in restoring others. Gal. 6:1 • We cannot go to others with a self righteous attitude.

  14. These fruits of the Spirit make it easy for us to entreated by others. • James 3:17 - “easy to be entreated.” (KJV) When someone has to entreat me, what kind of person am I? Do I lack an open mind regarding myself? • All of us need to be willing to admit that perhaps that the problem is with me, not others. • These fruits of the Spirit help us suffer injury at the hands of others. - Notice the example of Moses when he was criticized. Num. 12:1-3

  15. Be careful of anyone who has to tell you that he is “HUMBLE!” • Many equate boldness, confidence, and an uncompromising spirit with arrogance, while equating a soft, uncertain and compromising spirit with humility. –

  16. True humility is NOT timidity but boldness!! – Acts 4:13,29,31; 7:51-60; 2 Cor. 7:4; Phil. 1:20 • True humility is NOT uncertainty but confidence!! – Acts 28:31; Eph 3:12; 1 John 3:21 • True humility does NOT COMPROMISE truth – Gal. 2:5; 2 Cor. 10:3-5; • True humility does NOT surrender but fights!! Eph 6:10-18; 2 Tim 2:3

  17. We need to learn humility. • Micah 6:8 • Matt. 5:3 • 1 Pet. 5:5 • Notice how being submissive to others is coupled with humility. • Truly, it takes a humble person to be submissive to others.

  18. Jesus was Humble – He taught us to be humble – Humility is NOT WEAKNESS – but STRENGTH!! Humility is essential to salvation!!!!
