  1. 8th Grade Science Bowl EOG Competition

  2. DON’T FORGET When you get your EOG booklet – label your periodic table first thing!

  3. Face Off – CALL MY BLUFF! • Team 1 question : all stand if know the answer (5 seconds) • Team 2 : pick person standing to answer • Team 1 : if correct win as many as standing • If lose: if wrong lose as many as standing • Cant pick the same person in a row • Only the students who are up can speak… you CAN NOT give your teammates help. If you call out a point goes to the other team.

  4. HOLD UP! • There’s a CATCH… • You must also ONLY demonstrate POSITIVE actions – any put downs or negative statements towards other team/teammates results in immediate independent loss of points. Everyone makes mistakes, let’s focus on being EXTRAORDINARY!!!

  5. Rules and Regulations This is a team exercise. No put downs or making fun of anyone. Keep in mind… The ultimate goal is for EVERY 8th grader to score a 3 or 4. So help each other out!

  6. Let's Begin… You EOG

  7. Which of the following is an example of a mixture? • Melting ice • Sand water • Boiling water • Alcohol in water

  8. Answer B) Sand in water

  9. The reactants involved in a chemical reaction are shown: Na 2 O + H 2 O -- ? How many O atoms must be present in the product that forms from this reaction? • 1 • 2 • 3 • 4

  10. Answer B) 2

  11. Which of the following may happen during a physical change? • New substances are formed • Reactants form products • A precipitate is formed • The temperature may increase

  12. Answer D) The temperature may increase

  13. Which of the following compounds contains the greatest number of atoms? • CO 2 • C22H46 • C6H12O6 • CH4

  14. Answer B) C22H46

  15. Which of the following is an example of a chemical change? • Water evaporating • Wood burning • Ice cream melting • Face blushing

  16. Answer B) Wood Burning

  17. Carlos has two unidentified liquids labeled A and B. The liquids look similar, but they are different colors. Carlos needs to determine if the two liquids have the same density. To do this, Carlos decides to combine the liquids. Will combining the liquids help Carlos determine if the densities are the same? • No, it will not be possible to tell them apart once they are mixed. • Yes, the liquids will form separate layers if their densities are different. • Yes, a reaction will occur if the densities are not the same. • No, density has nothing to do with how the liquids mix.

  18. Answer B) Yes, the liquids will form separate layers if their densities are different.

  19. You test the local stream water with a pH indicator strip. It turns a light orange for a pH of 4. What does this indicate about the water in the stream? • The water is a strong acid. • The water is a strong basic. • The water is a weak acid. • The water is a strong base.

  20. Answer C) The water is a weak acid.

  21. Amber plans to build an electric motor for her science fair project. She decides to test how well different materials conduct electricity from the batteries to the motor. Which of the following materials will be the best conductor for Amber’s motor? • A copper wire • A rubber band • A glass rod • A neon bulb

  22. Answer A) A copper wire

  23. A scientist wants to study the effects of acid rain on the water quality in a lake. Which of the following pieces of equipment would be most useful to the scientist? • pH meter • barometer • GPS • Dissolved oxygen meter
