  1. SPS crab cavity meeting close-out – final notes R. Calaga, O. Capatina, C.M. Ginsburg, T. Jones, A. Macpherson, E. Montesinos, S. Pattalwar, T. Peterson, A. Ratti Many others participated critically

  2. Introduction • Activities during 1-2 August and 5-6 August, 2013, included visits to CERN facilities, presentations about SRF activity at CERN, presentations about crab cavity constraints, concepts for tests in SPS, concepts for operation in LHC, and SPS cryomodule design discussions. • The agenda with links to presentations may be found at • https://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=263565 • The following slides summarize meeting conclusions including some editing based on follow-up discussions

  3. Recommendations • Include LHC dummy beampipe • Include internal cavity alignment monitoring • Do not include any beam instrumentation in the CM • Design for 2K CM operation (not 4K) • Add guard pump on spool piece to protect cavity vacuum • Formulate steps for installation and removal in 2-4 day increments, as possible, to accommodate natural technical stops • Seek common interfaces in the CM to allow for fastest possible CM swaps • Prefer service module to be common among CM’s • SM18 cryomodule test will be the first cold test of dressed cavity performance (including tuner and high-power coupler) • Confirm active alignment concept in SM18 • Requests to US cavity designers shall go through Alex R. • All data and drawings are to be submitted to CERN EDMS

  4. CM Design issues: Action items (1/2) • Moveable support table alignment requirements needed by end of year (CERN). • Double-wall tube (or equivalent) length needed by mid-October for all cavity designs (STFC, Fermilab). • Put the other cavities into the UK CM by end of September (STFC) • Calculate coupler thermal effects because coupler ceramic is in direct view of the cavity, by end of October (STFC). • Provide coupler assembly procedure draft for review, end of Sep. (STFC) • Ensure no interference between the waveguide with other equipment, e.g., tuner actuators, by end of year (STFC, Fermilab). • Cavity designers specify what (if any) instrumentation needed inside CM, by end of year. • Two draft documents on common safety requirements by November (for Daresburymeeting) (STFC, CERN, FNAL) • Cavity designers to provide CERN the requirements for vacuum to protect cavity vacuum (US/STFC). Follow up with vacuum group (CERN). (By end of year) • Specify SPS warm-up and cool-down time requirements (end of year). (CERN) • Specify naming conventions in EDMS. (CERN)

  5. Performance/tests: Action items (2/2) • General • Propose additional mechanical tests at SPL mock-up associated with vibrationand movement (STFC start) Check what has been done already. (CERN) – Dec 2013 • Request magnetic field survey of the SPS area in three steps (CERN) • Request magnetic measurements now – Sep 2013 • Request to the machine group to estimate the magnetic field with all machine components powered – TBD but soon • Once machine is fully on, measure magnetic field again • SM18 • Detail required SM18 tests (CERN) – Dec 2013 • Demonstrate active alignment concept in SM18 prior to LHC installation after SPS test(all) • SPS • Decide if we need a mask/collimatorto protect CM (CERN) • Provide sketch of SPS test program (CERN) – Nov 2013 • Devise a method to trigger a quench on fast time scale (all) – Dec 2013 • Once we have bellows layout, request RF group whether we need to add RF screening fingers (CERN) - Dec 2013.
