CONFUCIANISM • Confucius was a great thinker, statesman, educator, and founder of the Confucian School of Thought in ancient China • This school placed a lot of emphasis on relationships and one’s role in society • Confucius was born in 551 BC and died in 476 BC during the Spring/Autumn Period, a period of war and unrest within China

  8. CONFUCIUS IDEAS • Focused on ethics, or proper behavior, for individual and governments. He believed people should conduct their lives by two basic principals: • Ren-concern for others • Li-appropriate behavior • He believed society would function better if everyone followed these principals.

  9. KINSHIP • Confucius taught a code of proper conduct for people. In Confucianism there were five basic relationships. Each type of relationship had its own duties: -Father and son -Elder brother and junior brother -Husband and wife -Friend and friend -Ruler and subject

GROUP ASSESSMENT • Each group has been assigned a certain situation • Your group must come up with an answer to this situation based on the principals of Confucianism • Once your group creates a solution to the situation, you will write it on an index card • We will then pass it along to another group. Each group must come up with a different solution than the previous group • Be sure to base your answer on the Confucius principals • You will find the printed principals in your bucket to serve as a group reminder
