  2. Originated in China in the 5th century BCE • About 6.3 million people follow Confucianism

Terms • Taoism: a religion native to China, its followers attempt to live according to the “Tao”, or the way which they believe governs the universe • Daoism: philosophical system developed by Lao-tzu and Chuang-tzu advocating a simple honest life and noninterference with the course of natural events • Yin/Yang: two principals of Chinese religion, one negative, dark and feminine (yin), and one positive, bright, and masculine (yang), the interactions with these influence the destinies of living things • Five Classics: are described in terms of the five visions: metaphysical, political, poetic, social, and historical • Five Elements: represent cyclic movements. Wood, fire, earth, water, and metal. This list was made to cover and explain all things

  4. Terms Continued • Xin: refers to keeping ones word and being faithful. One of the “Five Constant Virtues.” • Yi: important in Confucianism, means justice and righteousness • Zhi: Means wisdom, believed that wisdom didn’t just concern the persons ability and aptitude, but also his moral cultivation • Jen: Another word for humaneness in Confucianism. • Chung: Means loyalty to the state • Hsiao: filial piety, which is considered very important in this religion, is the primary duty of respect, obedience, and to care for ones elderly relation. Also means love within the family

  5. Symbols The Yin Yang sign represents Taoism's way of understanding opposites (dark – feminine, light – masculine)

  7. Symbols This symbol is used to represent Confucianism. It is often used at weddings because it represents harmony, righteousness, and relationships.

  8. History of Confucianism • The founder of Confucianism, Kong Qiu, was born in 552 B.C.E. • He died in 479 B.C.E. • The name Confucius came about by Jesuit missionaries in China in the 16th-century • It was the Latin name of Kong Fuzi

History of Confucianism • Confucius was a teacher to sons of the nobility at the time when formal education was just beginning in China • He traveled from region to region with a small group of disciples • Who would later become government officials • He was not famous during his time • Considered himself to be a failure

  10. History of Confucianism • He wanted to be the advisor to a powerful ruler and believed with the right advice the ruler cold bring about an ideal world • Confucius said heaven and the afterlife were beyond human capacity to understand • Need to focus on this life

  11. History of Confucianism • He taught his students to respect one’s parents, teachers, and elders • Learn from one another and honor others’ cultural norms

  12. Beliefs • They offer sacrifices to their gods through meditation • Earth, the sun, the moon, the stars, the clouds, and the mountains are all separate gods • Each god gets a sacrifice • Angels also receive sacrifices

  13. Beliefs Continued • They believe spirits of their ancestors are immortal • Use rituals to offer sacrifices to them • Banquets • Ceremonies • Other large celebrations • They don’t believe in heaven or hell

  14. Basic Duties • Honor mother and father • Give respect to everyone • Are more concerned about moral values than other religions • Would never think about harming someone physically or verbally

  15. Facts • They don’t believe in a god • Various gods and ancestors • Its sacred texts are the Analects, the Five Classics, and the Four Books • Spread to Japan and Korea where it’s still studied

  16. Facts Continued • Has been followed for 5-6 million years • Can be viewed as a philosophy • East Asians seldom refer to themselves as followers of Confucius • They don’t really have a clergy • Scholar-official

  17. The Five Constant Virtues • Ren- the virtue of benevolence, charity and humanity. • Yi- honesty, uprightness. • Zhong- doing ones best. • Shu- consideration of others. • Li- good manners, politeness, ceremony, or worship.

  18. The Five Elements • Wood • Growth and beginnings; green • Fire • Blossoming and youth; red • Earth • Adulthood; yellow • Metal • Persistence; silver • Water • Wisdom of old age; blue

  19. The Five Elements Continued • Believed all colors came from black and white • Black • Heaven’s color • White • Brightness, purity, fulfillment; mourning • Red • Good fortune and joy • Blue-green • Spring • Yellow • Earth; considered most beautiful
