  2. Question 2 8 marks, 12 minutes, 4/5 paragraphs Headline / sub-headline: identify language features – write about the effect on the reader + link to the image / main text Image: comment on the connotations of shot type / angle, colours, content - write about the effect on the reader + link to the headline / main text This shows / this suggests / this connotes

  3. Question 2 – examiner’s comments ‘Weaker answers tended to be generic, the most successful attended to the words in the headline and the detail in the picture’ Top tip: Leave a line between each paragraph so you can easily see how many points you’ve made – you need 4/5

  4. Q2. Read Source 2, the article and the picture that goes with it called I won’t raise a cup of warm wine to this posh pensioner You have 4 minutes to find the links that you will write about. Explain how the headline, picture and caption are effective and how they link to the text Here is the full colour image that accompanied the original article

  5. 8 minutes to write your answer • Leave a line between paragraphs • Each paragraph to include: ‘this suggests...’ + effect on reader + link to main body of text • Swap work – highlight the above key things in each paragraph. If it’s not there, write it yourself – you have only 3 minutes.

  6. Question 4 16 marks, 4 minutes plan + 20 minutes writing. First thing to do: Find 3 / 4 examples of language for effect in each text Make comparisons: Write about one use of language in source X , connective, write about similar/different use of language in source Y You must quote, analyse and compare!

  7. Structure of Q4 • Compare first paragraphs of each (this could be headings but doesn’t have to be) • 3 / 4 paragraphs comparing language features including quotes + analysis of effect • Contrast both + conclude

  8. Basics Best This suggests that... This shows that... This implies that... The use of the word ______ suggests... The use of (name the technique) has the effect of... 9. Examiner’s comments on Q4 • Comparison needs to be focused on language, not content, audience or purpose • Quotes must support the point being made • Candidates who scored poorly tended to just list language techniques without giving the effect or making a comparison • Choose examples of interesting or ‘vivid’ language

  10. You will have read all sources before you answer Q4 • In preparation, read Source 3 and underline all references to the author’s thoughts and feelings (as this is what Q3 will ask you about)

  11. Q4 – compare how language is used for effect in source 2 and source 3 4 minutes to plan – pick quotes, find techniques First line: 3/4 language features: (look for vivid language as well as language devices) Conclude similarities / differences:

  12. 20 minutes to write your answer Be sure to: • Quote • Compare • Analyse effect • Mention the audience

  13. Swap + annotate Label every time they: • Include a quote • Mention a language device • Use an analysis phrase (this suggests...) • Make a comparison • Mention the effect on the reader Ideally, each paragraph will have each of these
