  3. Question 2 – examiner’s comments ‘Weaker answers tended to be generic, the most successful attended to the words in the headline and the detail in the picture’ Top tip: Leave a line between each paragraph so you can easily see how many points you’ve made – you need 4/5

Explain how the headline, picture and caption are effective and how they link to the text Here is the full colour image that accompanied the original article

  5. 8 minutes to write your answer • Leave a line between paragraphs • Each paragraph to include: ‘this suggests...’ + effect on reader + link to main body of text • Swap work – highlight the above key things in each paragraph. If it’s not there, write it yourself – you have only 3 minutes.

  6. Question 4 16 marks, 4 minutes plan + 20 minutes writing. First thing to do: Find 3 / 4 examples of language for effect in each text Make comparisons: Write about one use of language in source X , connective, write about similar/different use of language in source Y You must quote, analyse and compare!

  7. Structure of Q4 • Compare first paragraphs of each (this could be headings but doesn’t have to be) • 3 / 4 paragraphs comparing language features including quotes + analysis of effect • Contrast both + conclude

  9. Examiner’s comments on Q4 • Comparison needs to be focused on language, not content, audience or purpose • Quotes must support the point being made • Candidates who scored poorly tended to just list language techniques without giving the effect or making a comparison • Choose examples of interesting or ‘vivid’ language

  10. You will have read all sources before you answer Q4 • In preparation, read Source 3 and underline all references to the author’s thoughts and feelings (as this is what Q3 will ask you about)
