The Israelites • The Egyptians enslaved Israelites. • Moses led a revolt against the Egyptians. • Many enslaved Israelites followed Moses back to Canaan. • The Israelites agreed to have one leader for their 12 tribes. • King Saul was their first, followed by King David, and then David’s son, Solomon.

  3. The Lydians • The Lydians lived in an area northwest of Phoenicia. • Lydia was located on the western end of peninsula, which now is known as the country of Turkey. • Lydia was a very wealthy place. • Back then, they didn’t pay with money, they bartered. • Bartering is when they pay with work, instead of money.

  4. The Phoenicians • They lived on a strip of land that is now northern Israel. • Phoenicians dyed their cloth with purple because purple was in great demand. • Phoenicians exported cedar wood to the Egyptians. • Their alphabet was very important to them. • The Phoenicians created one of the first alphabets in about 1000 B.C.

  5. The Persians • Cyrus the Great was very responsible for building the Persian Empire. • He conquered his neighbors with a huge standing army. • The Persians took over lands from Asia Minor to northern Pakistan. • When Cambyses, Cyrus’s son, died, Darius ruled the Persian Empire until it ended.

  6. Important People • Abraham was an important figure to the Israelites. • God spoke to Abraham and told him to go live in Canaan with his family. • Cyrus was the ruler of Anshan. He was a skilled military leader. • Darius was an organizer. Darius used tribute money to build places at the two capitals, Persepolis and Susa. • King David freed his people from the Philistines.

  7. Religions • A belief in one god is monotheism. The Israelites believe in only one god. • Most Mesopotamians worshipped many gods. • Judaism is the religion of the Jewish people. • Synagogues are houses of worship that the Jewish people built. • A belief in many gods is polytheism. The Persians believed in many gods.
