Start on the Warm-Up: • It is 2011 and the country Italy is trying to expand its land holdings (territory) to gain more power. What could the U.S. do to stop this? What should the U.S. do to stop this?

  3. Japan first looks to expand • Fall of 1931, Japanese military officers invade Manchuria • Japan needed to expand to gain more natural resources • Japanese cited “Mukden Incident” to seize Manchuria

  4. Bye Bye League! • U.S. refuses to recognize Japanese takeover • League of Nations condemns the seizure: Japan leaves the league

  5. Nanjing Massacre (Rape of Najking) • 1937, Chinese and Japanese forces clash • Japanese seize the Chinese capital of Nanjing in December of 1937

  6. New Asian Order (Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere) • Japanese want to create the New Order (Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere)in East Asia (Japan, China, Manchuria) • Want to create a new system of control in Asia
