  2. Causes of WWII • Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939 • Germany surrendered in WWI • gave up large parts of its territory • Paid an enormous amount of money to France • Gave up air force and navy • Limit army to only 100,000 men • Germans were very resentful

Causes (continued) • National Socialist German Workers Party (Nazi Party): Political group seeking power in Germany to restore country to power • Adolf Hitler was their leader and appointed chancellor in 1933. He had served in the German Army during WWI. • Hitler made himself all powerful, eliminated freedom in Germany and began wiping out opposition.

  4. Causes (continued) • By 1936, the German army had 500,000 men, an air force, and was building a navy. • In Italy, Benito Mussolini became Prime Minister and also began eliminating freedom. (Italy had been on the winning side in WWI, but was badly weakened by lost battles). • Japan did not fight in any battles during WWI, but gained some territory and wanted to expand more.

  5. Causes (continued) • Hitler and the Soviet Union signed a peace treaty. Germany is warned by Great Britain and France not to invade Poland. • Germany easily invaded Poland with the Soviet Union. They divide the country.
