Relevant Terms • Suffrage- the right to vote, especially in a political election • Abigail Adams- “Remember the women” • American Woman suffrage Association (AWSA) • Founded by Lucy Stone & Co. in 1869 • American Equal Rights Association • Organization that formed in the 1860’s • National Woman’s Suffrage Association (NWSA) • Founded by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony • National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) • (1890) merged from NWSA and AWSA • National Woman’s Party • Founded by Alice Paul-Evolved from the Congressional Union • Fourteenth Amendment • (1868) strengthened African American voting rights

Relevant Terms • Fifteenth Amendment • (1870) A citizen’s right to vote cannot be denied by “race, color, or previous condition of servitude” • Minor vs. Happersett • (1875) Supreme Court ruled that 14th & 15th amendment don’t give women the right to vote • National Association of Colored Women • (1896)African American women’s clubs that wanted suffrage • National Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage • (1911) Anti-suffragist party • Susan B. Anthony Amendment • Eventually renamed the 19th amendment • For women’s voting rights • Failed 3 times • Jeanette Rankin • First women elected to Congress (Montana 1917-1919, 1941-1943) • The Revolution • Suffragist newspaper started by Anthony & Stanton • The Nineteenth Amendment • (1920) Gave women the rights to vote

Rights before the 1920’s • Mothers & Homemakers • Law defined them this way • Part of Household • Role shaped by position in family • Viewed as part of family headed by a man • Servant • Status of married woman states that her husband is “her master” and her rights would be protected by him. • Performed everything her husband wished her to • Not considered a Single Individual • Under marriage, legal existence of women are suspended during the marriage • No Voting • No voice in Parliament or consent to make laws • Not independent enough to express their own free will. • Men controlled women’s votes because women were economically dependent upon their husbands • No Possessions • Any land or goods women held prior to marriage belonged to their husband • If a woman worked, all wages legally belonged to her husband • Home Stuck • Her place in life was with the family in her husband’s home

Important Figures • Laura Clay • (1849-1941) • Father was an abolitionist • Founded Kentucky Equal Rights Association • Promoter of State-based Suffrage • Opponent of the Nineteenth Amendment • Believed they should be trying to pass amendments of the state level. • Alice Paul • (1885-1977) • Founder of the National Women’s Party • PhD from U of Pennsylvania • Lead NAWSA lobbying efforts in Washington • Helped found the World Women’s Party • Helped secure inclusion of gender equality principles in the U.N. (1940)

Important Figures • Elizabeth Cady Stanton • (1815-1902) • President of NWSA & NAWSA • Helped organize the Seneca Falls convention of 1848 • Lucy Burns • (1818-1893) • Founder of America Woman Suffrage Association • Participated w/ antislavery activists • Paid for her college education • “‘Tis next to a chattel slave to be a legal wife”

Rights worth fighting for • Voting • Women able to represent themselves • Right to own property • Equal rights as men to own their own piece of property, whether bought or inherited • Equal education • Can be equally educated as men, including going to universities • Equality as human beings • Now equals with men, not working under them as servants • Run for elected offices • President, congresswoman, senator, etc • Equal job opportunities • Can apply for same jobs as men • Paid equal wages as men
