  2. Eric Carle • Born June 25, 1929 In Syracuse, NY German descent, returned to Germany at six years old. He was educated in Art School in Stuttgart.

  3. After troubles during World war II, Carle returned to the United States in 1952. • He became a graphic designer, then later the art director of an advertising agency.

  4. Author, Bill Martin Jr, asked Carle to illustrate a children’s story he had written. Carle’s red lobster picture that Carle had created for a Brown Bear advertisement. That later became their book project.

  5. Artistic Style • His art work is created in collage technique, using hand-painted, stamped and splattered tissue papers, which he cuts and layers to form bright and cheerful images.

  6. Quote • “With many of my books I attempt to bridge the gap between the home and school.” • The themes of his stories are usually drawn from his knowledge and love of nature. This is an interest shared by most children. Besides being beautiful and entertaining, his books always offer the child the opportunity to learn something about the world around them.
