  1. Aviation WeatherGIMPAP Review – 11 August 2006 • Participants • Kenneth Pryor (Operational Prod. Dev. Branch) • Andrew Bailey (Raytheon ITSS) GIMPAP Annual Review Aviation Project

  2. Project Goals • Develop and evaluate potential new products or techniques, or improve existing products, derived from GOES to improve detection and short range forecasting of aviation hazards including: • Fog and low clouds • Aircraft icing • Volcanic ash clouds • Convective downburst winds • Turbulence GIMPAP Annual Review Aviation Project

  3. GOES-TAC Guidance (FY06) • Continue aviation product development (icing, turbulence, downburst, etc). Be sure to make it clear in the proposal what is new. • Hybrid Microburst Index, Vertical Shear Index products developed • Identify methods for transfer of products to operations (slide #5) • Coordinate with CIMSS and CIRA on volcanic ash detection work (slide # 6) • Contribute training when possible (slide #7) GIMPAP Annual Review Aviation Project

  4. Major Accomplishments • Volcanic Ash • Evaluated GOES-12 algorithm (using Bands 2,4,6) for Soufriere Hills, Montserrat (March 2006) • Tutorial published on the National Weather Association (NWA) web site • Aircraft Icing • Paper accepted for publication in AMS journal Weather and Forecasting • ICECAP product implemented in AWIPS • Convective Downbursts • Hybrid Microburst Index (HMI) product developed, paper presented at AMS Conf. on Satellite Meteorology and Oceanography • Training • 12 VISIT microburst sessions completed • 138 attendees from participating NWS offices GIMPAP Annual Review Aviation Project

  5. Operational Transition • Described in detail in STAR Project Plan • NWS “Aviation Initiative” • Improved fog/volcanic ash deployed on NWS AWIPS in late FY06 • Funding support requested via PPBES through FY10 for: • Icing, WMSI, etc. • FAA Product Development Team • Volcanic ash algorithms in use at Washington VAAC and on experimental Volcanic Ash Coordination Tool in Alaska • GOES-W Three-channel Volcanic Ash Product (TVAP) selected for implementation into AWIPS GIMPAP Annual Review Aviation Project

  6. GOES-12 Volcanic Ash Detection Evaluated Comparison of three-band method using GOES-12 Bands 2, 4, 6 (right) to GOES-12 visible image (left). GIMPAP Annual Review Aviation Project

  7. VISIT Sessions on GOES Sounder Microburst Products • Topics covered: • Hazards to aviation • Causes, processes • GOES Sounder products • Case studies • AWIPS availability • Participation • 12 sessions held • 138 forecasters attended GOES Wind Index GIMPAP Annual Review Aviation Project

  8. Hybrid Microburst Index (HMI) High HMI values indicate the presence of a deep convective boundary layer and microburst potential. NAM HMI image generated by AWIPS at NWSO Atlanta. GIMPAP Annual Review Aviation Project

  9. New Turbulence Products Identify regions of boundary layer turbulence and the potential for strong surface wind gusts. Wind gusts in excess of 50 knots observed at Idaho National Laboratory around 23Z. GIMPAP Annual Review Aviation Project

  10. FY06 Project Travel • NWA Annual Meeting (Oct ‘05) • AMS Annual Meeting (Jan ’06) • AMS 12th Conf. on Aviation, Range, and Aerospace Meteorology (Jan ‘06) • AMS 14st Conf. on Satellite Meteorology and Oceanography (Jan ‘06) GIMPAP Annual Review Aviation Project

  11. FY06 Publications Conference Papers: • 12th Conf. on Aviation, Range, and Aerospace Met., Atlanta, GA, Amer. Meteor. Soc.: • Improved clear air turbulence diagnostics based on adjustment dynamics (Ellrod/Knox) • 14th Conference on Satellite Meteorology and Oceanography, Atlanta, GA, Amer. Meteor. Soc.: • Evaluation of Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Shortwave Infrared Bands for Optimum Nighttime Fog Detection. (Ellrod) • The GOES Hybrid Microburst Index . (Pryor) GIMPAP Annual Review Aviation Project

  12. Technology Transfer • Conference presentations: • NWA Annual Meeting, St. Louis, MO: • Performance of Satellite Infrared Fog Detection Techniques with Major Fog-related Highway Accidents (Ellrod) • AMS 12th Conf. on ARAM: • Improved clear air turbulence diagnostics (Ellrod/Knox) • AMS 14th Conf. on SatMet : • Evaluation of MODIS Shortwave Infrared Bands for Optimum Nighttime Fog Detection. (Ellrod) • The GOES Hybrid Microburst Index (Pryor) • VISIT sessions on GOES Sounder Microburst Products • ArXiv.org papers (6) GIMPAP Annual Review Aviation Project

  13. FY07 Plans • Downbursts • Continue testing and validation of WMSI, HMI • Implementation of lightning (NLDN) data into the GOES microburst products. • Continue VISIT teletraining sessions on GOES microburst products • Icing • Edit journal article as needed (WAF) • Volcanic Ash / Fog • Support NWS AWIPS implementation as needed • Evaluate GOES-12 three-band volcanic ash product • Turbulence • Collaborate with J. Knox (U. of Ga.) on improved diagnostic techniques with satellite/model data GIMPAP Annual Review Aviation Project
