  1. Geospatial info-mobility service byreal-time data-integration and generalisation

  2. GiMoDig partners Finnish Geodetic Institute (co-ordinator) Dept. of Geoinformatics and Cartography University of Hanover Inst. for Cartography and Geoinformatics Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy National Survey and Cadastre- Denmark National Land Survey of Sweden National Land Survey of Finland

  3. - objectives • to develop and test methods for delivering geospatial data to a mobile user by means of real-time data-integration and generalisation • to create a prototype of a seamless data service providing access, through a common interface, to the primary topographic geo-databases maintained by the National Mapping Agencies

  4. Subobjectives 1/6. Real-time generalisation for mobile devices Development of methods and usage practices for generalising the graphic representation of geospatial data in real-time, to be suited for display of the data in varying scales on small, mobile devices with different display resolutions.

  5. ... subobjectives 2/6. Harmonisation and real-time integration of geospatial data Investigating the problems between national primary geospatial databases, often mutually heterogeneous in thematic definitions, and developing means for real-time integration of data.

  6. ... subobjectives 3/6. Requirements for mobile use Analysis of mobile use cases to adapt real-time generalisation and harmonisation of geospatial data to the requirements of a user in varying usage situations.

  7. ... subobjectives 4/6. EUREF - map projections in real time Development of methods for real-time transformation of spatial data from different national geo-databases to a common, EUREF-based co-ordinate system.

  8. ...subobjectives 5/6. Test Standards for vector-data Investigating and developing methods for transferring vector-formatted spatial data to a mobile user using emerging standards, like XML, and testing the applicability of the standards for Web-based spatial services in a international pilot project involving national primary geodata sets.

  9. ... subobjectives 6/6. Prototype system as a testbed Development and implementation of a prototype system that can be used as a test-bed for the developed methods.

  10. System architecture of the testbest

  11. Technology • based on the principle of distributed GI databases • XML/GML are planned to be used intensively • solutions to be based on earlier research on WebGIS, see e.g. www.fgi.fi/osastot/karto/julkaisut/julkaisut_eng.html

  12. Work packages - technical • User requirements • Small-display cartography • Real-time generalisation • Global schema • System architecture • Common access interface • Integration and prototyping • Validation

  13. Work packages – management and related • Project management • Dissemination and implementation • Assessment and evaluation

  14. Resources • Information Society Technologies (IST) Programme of EC • 19 person years • started November 1st 2001 • duration 3 years

  15. Summary • GiMoDig has started • the project can serve NMAs and their clients as a test environment for XML/GML technology • mobile use sets new requirements for GI services, e.g. in real-time generalisation • first effort in Europe for the harmonisation of large scale data
