Second Grade Newsletter Week of September 30,2013 • Math: • Students will look at numbers in groups of twos, fives, and tens. • Students will be working on place value with Smartboard activities as well as in trading games. • Students will learn and show different representations of the same number (for example, 23, 2 tens 3 ones, twenty-three, etc.). • Math vocabulary this week: place value, number line, 100’s chart, long, flat, unit • Reading: • Due to swimming this week, we • will not have reading lessons in class. • Please remember to have your child continue their 20 minutes of reading at least four times a week. • Social Studies: • Studentswillbegin a new unit of studyover Texas. • Studentswilllearnabout Texas symbols and landmarks. • Studentswilllearnthe Texas pledge . • Studentswilldiscoverwherewe are onthemapand howtolocateRockwallbasedonotherlocations. Studentswill use cardinal directions. • Studentswilllearnabout Irma Rangel. • Spelling: • We will not have a spelling pattern, new word wall words, or a spelling test this week due to swimming. • Feel free to have your child review and practice the past weeks’ words and patterns at home. • Science: • We will be continuing the unit on the • characteristics of living organisms • Students will learn about the following parts of a plant and how those parts help plants meet their basic needs: leaves, flower, fruit, and seeds. • Students will show their learning by creating a parts of a plant foldable. • Students will be tested over the parts of plants, labeling a diagram with the plant parts. • Writing: • Duetoswimmingthisweek, wewillnot • haveany new writinglessons. • Wewillcontinuewritingnextweek.
