The Heart and Circulatory System; The Basic Functions

What are the main parts of the circulatory system

What are the main parts of the Circulatory System?

What s on the exterior of the heart

Coronary Arteries

These provide the heart muscle with oxygen rich blood.

What’s on the exterior of the heart?

The heart

The Heart

  • Found in the thoracic cavity, between the lungs and slightly to the left.

  • It is the size of a large fist.

  • Contains 4 chambers

    • Atrium (right & left)

    • Ventricle (right & left)

  • It has 2 pumps:

    • Right side: Pulmonary Circulation (lungs)

    • Left side: Systemic Circulation (body)

The heart and circulatory system the basic functions

Pulmonary (LUNGS) Circulation

Systemic (BODY) Circulation

Pulmonary lungs circulation

Pulmonary (LUNGS) Circulation

The right side of the heart pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs.

The left side receives oxygenated blood.

Systemic body circulation

Systemic (BODY) Circulation

The left side of the heart pumps oxygenated blood to the body.

The right side of the heart receives deoxygenated blood.

Reinforcement Video:

Which side of the heart is larger why

Which side of the heart is larger? Why?

The right side pumps blood to the lungs.

The left side pumps blood to the entire body.

So Which side will require more power?

The left  so it is thicker & has more muscle

The heart and circulatory system the basic functions

Where does the

blood flow?

An exception

Arteries

Carry oxygenated blood away from the 

BUT

The Pulmonary Arteries carry deoxygenated blood away from the 

Veins

Carry deoxygenated blood to the 

BUT

The Pulmonary Veins carry oxygenated blood to the 

An Exception!

Reinforcement Videos:

Heart beat

Heart Beat

  • The heart makes 2 sounds as it beats:

    “Lub-Dub”

  • The sounds are caused by the closing of the valves

    • “Lub”  closing of both AV valves

    • “Dub”  closing of the aortic & pulmonary valves

  • The valves are supported by tendons.

Chordae tendinae

Heart rate feel your pulse

Heart Rate(feel your pulse)

  • Heart Rate is thenumber of times  beats per minute

  • Average rate varies  age, gender, and health

  • ~70 beats/min

  • A healthier person has a larger heart and a slower heart rate

The heart and circulatory system the basic functions

Factors that can cause the  rate to speed up:

Physical activity

Emotions (fear, excitement)

Chemicals (ex: adrenaline, tobacco)
