  3. I. Overview • This unit gives a glimpse of some growing pains that China is undergoing in its rapid development.

  4. Structure • All three articles are about some challenges facing China during its emergence as a great power. Such growing pains of our nation can be internal problems and difficulties, but they can also come in the form of external pressures and prejudices.

Text A China Food Scare: A Dash of Racism • Main Idea of the Text • The one-sided coverage of the Chinese food-safety problems by the American media has aroused and reinforced irrational fears about Chinese food or even Asian food.
