As they approached their exit off the highway, another car cuts in front of them forcing the man veer off the road. They crashed into a massive tree. Minutes later an ambulance rushed them to the hospital. The boy needed emergency surgery to stop the bleeding. A doctor takes a look at him and says, “I can’t operate on this boy. He’s my son.”” How can this be?

Who rules your favorite sport –Manny Ramirez, Tiger Woods, Cristiano Ronaldo? Why do you think he or she is the best athlete in the world? • You have $15 to watch a movie and you want to have a good time. What type of movie is your favorite –action flicks, romantic comedies, scary movies? Why is it the best kind of movie in the industry?

Opinion: The cafeteria should serve pizza for lunch 3 times a week. • Pizza is cheap and easy to make. • Most teens like to eat pizza. • Pizza was invented in Italy. Italians love to cook. • The only thing better than pizza is hamburgers. • Pizza is round. You can learn about Geometry. • Pizza is easier to clean than spaghetti or chili.

I was a child, a brother, and a father. Although the entire world owes me for their existence, I am not known for any of these things. The reason I am known for is for single-handedly killing ¼ (a quarter) of the entire world’s population without the help of any army.” Who am I?

Ex.: Her eyes were jewels in a blue sky. • Hint: The perspective from which a story is told. • Hint: The turning point in a story; where the conflict reaches the most exciting point. • Hint: What actually happens is different from what the reader expected would happen. • Hint: The atmosphere or general feeling the reader has toward the story.

Bellwork 95, cont. • Hint: The story is told from the perspective of one of the characters using the personal pronoun, “I”. • Hint: A struggle between opposing forces; synonym to “problem.” • Hint: A comparison that uses like or as. Ex.: Her eyes were like jewels in a blue sky. • Hint: The end of the story, where the loose ends are tied up. • Hint: The character or force that opposes the protagonist and gives rise to the conflict of the story.

It is sometimes explicit but other times the reader needs to infer using clues from the title, character’s actions, and the plot. Recognizing the theme of a story helps the reader understand how the author thinks about the subject and his/her purpose for writing.
