Lesson: Ireland: Continued Fighting and Struggle Todayhttps://www.irelandcontinuedfighting.com/studentssandi/…/struggle-today Objective: An AP 10th grade World History Unit that focuses on comparative nationalistic, intra-country civil war. This project calls upon students to employ critical thinking, collaboration, creativity (creators), and communication to design a multi-media, interactive international website that encompasses student team choices of historical and current inter-twined topics. Students will conduct secondary and primary research, turning over “every rock” to uncover multiple sources that enlighten those interested in Ireland’s tumultuous colonial history. The unit project will address “cause and effect” through Irish History—and may draw upon inter-disciplinary studies and parallel global situations; and, also evaluate “change over time”—as historians. Topics should include hyper-links off of main left web screen toolbar that include: Irish history, English colonial history, nationalism, imperialism, popular culture, culture and touring Ireland, geography, class and status, as as well as militarism (guerrilla war.) Purpose: To instill critical thinking and inter-disciplinary perspectives through studying an intriguing and provocative subject, such as Sein Finn, The Irish Republican Army, and the British “Crown.” Why did Ireland fight so hard to establish The Republic of Ireland; and why was Ulster, or Northern Ireland, left out of the post-WWl Treaty first negotiated by leader Michael Collins? What drives and galvanizes continued civil war between Irish militaristic and regional factions? Students often find it shocking that such guerrilla warfare exists in Western Europe—not like well-known stories emanating out of Africa, the Middle East, South and Central America, Asia, or the former U.S.S.R. Pedagogy: This unit uses the precepts from “8 Characteristics of the Innovation Mindset.” Student intelligence and talent derives from better ideas—topics that do not “collect dust.” This website strives to put into motion a pro-active agreement with Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, that will establish a method allowing a selected platform for the AP World History students to seek “chats” with Irish students. Trinity College in Dublin provides a university setting in The Republic of Ireland that wouldn’t be as risky as pulling inter-action with more vulnerable voices out of Northern Ireland. This historical and current events voyage jumps out of a traditional educator’s box. On the SMAR scale, building a collaborative, communicative, creator based, and critical thinking website—rich in-depth themes, with fresh data—places student work on the “Redefinition” plane. As noted on the second screen grab, hyper-links, rotating film and images, propaganda, “hot news”, mapping and touring, and international chatting will demand use of multiple google design tools noted.
