  1. Autism By: Darian Seaton

  2. My little cousin Carter has Asperger's. Carter was born with a whole in his heart and had open heart surgery at just 6 months. He was kept in a coma for two months and due to this he has motor skill delays and social delays.

  3. According to autismspeaks.org “Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors.” What is autism?

  4. Autism now affects 1 in 88 children and 1 in 54 boys • Autism prevalence figures are growing • Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S. • Autism costs a family $60,000 a year on average • Autism receives less than 5% of the research funding of many less prevalent childhood diseases • Boys are nearly five times more likely than girls to have autism • There is no medical detection or cure for autism Did you know?

  5. One of the main differences between Asperger’s and autism is that many children with autism lack communication skills. Asperger’s kids often speak very well. Carter has Asperger’sThere is a difference.

  6. limited or inappropriate social interaction • "robotic" or repetitive speech • challenges with nonverbal communication (gestures, facial expression, etc.) coupled with average to above average verbal skills • tendency to discuss self rather than others • inability to understand social/emotional issues or nonliteral phrases • lack of eye contact or reciprocal conversation • obsession with specific, often unusual, topics • one-sided conversations • awkward movements and/or mannerisms Signs of Asperger’s

  7. I plan on working with kids who have Autism and help them have a voice. Carter is one of the smartest people I know and I’m so blessed to have him in my life. By talking about autism we can help people understand and be able to communicate better with children who have autism. Speak up!
