Thurrock admission process • Deadline Friday 21st October for us to pass on to Thurrock Council. • Deadline Monday 31stOctober for online applications. • One form for all schools everywhere (except fee paying schools).
Church Schools Need an extra form called the “Supplementary Form”

Application Online • If you, apply online at www.thurrock.gov.uk/education Click on school admissions, select secondary and follow on-screen instructions
Making your decision • Take the chance to visit the schools (open evenings or better, during session). • Look at Ofsted reports and results over time. • Talk to other parents. • Remember schools change over time. • Involve your child. • Make your decision as a parent.

Complete the form • Return it before the deadline. • Late applications will not be considered until all the other applications have been processed. • List up to 6 schools in preferred order. • You can include schools outside Thurrock. • Include proof of residence.
The criteria • Read the school’s admission criteria in the Thurrock booklet. • Look at the number of places and the applications made last year. • Make your application on the basis of the school’s admission policy.
Priority • Putting a school 2nd or 3rd does not mean your application is treated any differently. • Schools are not told where you have placed them.
Your offer Offers will be sent out to all year 6 parents in England early in March. You will be offered a place at the highest school on your list that has space, according to the criteria given. If none of the schools listed have space you will be offered a place in the nearest school to you that does have a space.
Acceptance • The council will assume you accept the place unless you tell them otherwise. • You will be able to see which school you have been allocated on the website on 1st March.
Waiting Lists • If you do not get your preferred place you will be put on the waiting list and notified if a place becomes available. • At the end of the academic year the authority will write to you and ask if you wish to remain on it or not.
Appeals • Refusal letters are sent out the week beginning 15th March. The letter tells you how you can appeal. • Appeals can sometimes be successful. • For waiting lists and the appeals procedure see page 5 of the Thurrock booklet.

Eco - Warrior • Our topic this term is based around the theme of Eco-warrior. • We will be asking children to bring in various items that we can recycle in different ways for Art & Design Technology work.
Trips & visits • This term we will be studying Shakespeare’s infamous ‘Scottish Play’. • We are hoping to arrange a visit to Shakespeare’s Globe in London where the children will have the opportunity to take part in drama workshops and experience life in a theatre in Tudor times.
Swimming & PE • This terms PE will consist of Gymnastics/dance and swimming. • We would ask that children are well prepared on PE & Swimming days.
Homework • Each week we will give the children work to complete at home that will support the week’s class learning. • This will usually be Maths, Science & English. • It is very important that your child completes their homework as we believe this sets a good pattern in preparation for their transition to Secondary School. • The children have a week to complete their homework and we would appreciate your support in ensuring this happens.
Targets • Targets are about where we want children to be at the end of the year and what they need to learn to get there. • They are not just what we expect them to get but the extra they could achieve with more focus. • They are not general advice like “try harder” or “needs to check his work”.
Your child’s targets • We have a level target for every child. • There are next step curriculum targets which will help them get to their target level. • You will be given these on the consultation evening.
Head and Deputy Consultations • In addition to the usual consultation evening this term we will be arranging interviews with each child in year 6 and their parents to discuss aspirations and support. • Please sign up for these.
SATs Week 14th -18th May 2012 • For your children to get the best result make sure they attend well all year Especially leading up to SATs and essentially during the actual week,
Please Help • The area our children find most difficult is often writing. • Please encourage your child to practise writing at home with stories, diaries, letters, emails and by completing homework!
Support at Home • Work at home will help reinforce children’s learning at school. • In year 6 homework is increasingly designed to prepare children for their SATs tests in May.

Awards • Each child is considered against the criteria and ranked accordingly. • Children can achieve Bronze, Silver or Gold awards and Lakeside vouchers. • Presentation evening in July. • There will also be special awards for sports and other achievements over the year.
School Journey • We have been alternating between 2 centres for our residential school journey. For June 2012 we have booked Windmill Hill in Sussex. Children in year 5 and 6 who do not go on the school journey are offered similar activities at Grangewood Activity Centre in Thurrock.
