  1. Sustainable House of the Future – Active House 2020 Gitte Gylling Sørensen Industrial PhD at the VKR Group’s eight DEMO houses The VKR Group’s eight DEMO houses

  2. Disposition • Introduction • Project intention and objectives • Research hypothesis • Holistic method • Active House • Eight demo houses 14. november 2014

  3. IntroductionWho am I? • Gitte Gylling Sørensen • M. Sc. Eng. in Architecture Aalborg University June 2009 • Industrial PhD student at VKR Holding by December 1st 2009 • Enrolled at Aalborg University • Industrial PhD title: Sustainable House of the Future - Active House 2020 14. november 2014

  4. IntroductionWho am I? Interests • Techné / the meeting between science and phenomenology • Sustainability • Light / natural / artificial • Materiality / texture of material • Experience of space 14. november 2014

  5. Intention and objectives of PhD project • To develop a suggestion for a common European standard for future energy and CO2-neutral Active Houses. • Developing knowledge about the holistic approach to integrating fresh air, plenty of daylight and healthy indoor climate into a sustainable way of living. • Developing a method for integrating quantitative and qualitative parameters in developing buildings. 14. november 2014

  6. Research Hypothesis • Besides being energy neutral it is of great importance to human beings that their home is adapted into the surrounding environment and possess a high level of comfort, where daylight and fresh air are important parameters. • Through development of a scientific method buildings can be defined and measured in accordance with both quantitative and qualitative values within the parameters Energy, Indoor Climate and Environment. • By taking a holistic approach to future buildings on both quantitative and qualitative levels better buildings are created. 14. november 2014

  7. Method Holistic evaluation Definition of method for analysis Measurement data input Analysis of input Comparative studies Result New knowledge Quantitative measurements:Energy behaviour, energy balance, measurements of indoor climate ENERGY By project manager Definition of Quantitative measurement methods and matrixes Suggestion for a common European standard for future energy and CO2-neutral Active Houses. INDOOR CLIMATE By project manager Qualitative measurements:End-users’ real behaviour and experience of the house Definition of Qualitative measurement methods and matrixes ENVIRONMENT By project manager 14. november 2014

  8. Quantitative measurementsData matrix 14. november 2014 #8

  9. Quantitative measurementsData matrix Energy e.g. the measured solar thermal energy production [WindowMaster measured values] Indoor climate e.g. measured lighting level [How could this be measured?] Environment e.g. site solar intensity [How could this be measured?] 14. november 2014 #9

  10. Qualitative measurementsData matrix 14. november 2014 #10

  11. Qualitative measurementsData matrix Energy e.g. the experience of living in a plus energy house? [Qualitative methods - Interview] Indoor climate e.g. experience of daylight effect on interior space? [How could this be measured?] Environment e.g. experience of on site? [How could this be measured?] 14. november 2014 #11

  12. Active HouseWhat is an Active House? An Active House is CO2-neutral. By using renewable energy sources it has an exceptionally low level of energy consumption and procduces more energy than it concumes. An Active House has a healthy indoor climate, allowing. people to express themselves and live their lives in comfort. An Active House is designed, situated and constructed to interact with its environment. 14. november 2014 #12

  13. Active HouseDesign Parameters 1. A house that interacts with its environment 2. An open house that lets in nature 3. An intelligent house, controlled according to the weather and personal needs 4. An energy producing house 14. november 2014
