Events 1812 – Jose de San Martin led the Argentinean fight against Spain for independence which they achieved in 1816 1982 – Argentina and England fought in the Falkland Islands War which lead to England gaining control over the Falkland Islands 2007 – Christina Kirchner was elected president of Argentina and was the first elected female president of Argentina
  8. Lionel Messi Lionel Messi was born in Rosario, Argentina. As a child, he suffered from growth hormone deficiency. He plays for F.C. Barcelona and was the youngest player to score a league goal at the age of 17 years, 10 months. Lionel Messi also plays for Argentina’s national soccer team and while playing for their youth national team, Messi won the Golden Boot (most goals scored) and the Golden Ball (for being the best player in the tournament), at the Football World Youth Championships in 2005.
  9. Current Issues Deforestation is a big issue and in 91 years (from 1914-2005) Argentina has lost 72 million hectares of forest. If the trends continue, it is predicted that the native forests of Argentina will be gone by 2024. Lead pollution in the Pampas has risen and 59% of the children have an unsafe amount of lead in their bloodstreams. The harmful effects of lead on the environment are currently unknown.
  10. Current Issues (Cont.) There is a lack of safe drinking water because of the growing population and urbanization. This could lead to health issues for the citizens of Argentina. Buenos Aires has used up its aquifers and relies on the Rio de la Plata for water, but that is very risky since the river is subject to pollution.
  11. The Tango The tango is a very popular dance in Argentina. People dance the tango on the streets of Buenos Aires. The tango originated in the Buenos Aires and Rio de la Plata area. Today there are international tango competitions.The tango has spread around the whole world and is a very popular dance.
  12. U.S. Relations Argentina and the US have a friendly and symbiotic relationship They work on projects that involve counterterrorism, counternarcotics, and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, etc.
