  9. bothered • A woman told Berto to leave Jamaica alone because “big kids don’t like to be bothered by little kids.” • If you are bothered, you are upset or unhappy • Say the word “bothered”. • I’m bothered when someone has the TV on too loud. Which noise would bother you – soft music or thunder? Why?

  10. distance • Jamaica followed her brother at a distance. • If you are at a distance from someone or something, you are far away, not close. • Say the word “distance”. • We can see a cloud at a distance. What can you see at a distance – a treetop or my desk? Why?

  11. form • Jamaica used some wet sand to form a wall. • If you form something, you make it or shape it. • Say the word “form”. • I can use clay to form an animal shape. What could you use to form the letters in your name – a ruler or a pencil? Why?

  12. The Five Finger Rule By using a trick Called "The Five Finger Rule" You can quickly pick out A book that is cool. Read a page of a book To yourself, in your mind, Keep count on your fingers For every new word you find. For the first word, use one finger, For the next one use two, (Are you getting the idea Of just what to do?) If you are not up to five When a whole page is done, You've found a good book, Now read the whole thing: Have fun! -Patricia Murphy Tricia Nobel's poem, “Which Book?” provided the basic structure of this poem.

  16. Practice at home! You can… …use the oral practice sheet that your child brings home each day. This sheet contains the facts that your child has mastered, as well as the 3-4 new facts that were introduced during that day’s math class. 1. Have the child practice the “new” facts (these are found at the top of the page in the parentheses) 3 or 4 times orally. The child should say the problem and answer. 2. Using the oral practice sheet, have child practice 2-3 times. a. Have child read problem and answer. b. If your child hesitates or gives an incorrect answer, read the fact with the correct answer to your child. c. Have your child read the fact back to you with the correct answer. d. Have the child move back 3 problems on the practice sheet and continue oral practice.

  17. Or… …use flash cards. 1. Using your child’s oral practice sheet, pull those facts out of the flash card deck. 2. Have the child practice the “new” facts (those are found at the top of the page in the parentheses) 3 or 4 times. The child should say the problem and answer. 3. Using the flash cards representing all of the facts on the oral practice sheet, have child practice 2-3 times. a. Have child read problem and answer. b. If your child hesitates or gives an incorrect answer, read the fact with the correct answer to your child. c. Have your child read the fact back to you with the correct answer. d. Place the incorrectly answered cards 2-4 cards behind in the deck to be revisited.

  18. Things to remember: • Only practice facts from the oral practice sheet. If using flash cards, pull those cards from the deck to use. • Have child say problem and answer. • Have child repeat incorrect facts, back up three problems, and start again.

  23. OLWEUS BULLYING PREVENTION PROGRAM “You’ve got a friend in me!” • I pledge to take a stand against bullying at Peebles!

What is bullying? • Bullying is when a person repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to another person, who has difficulty defending himself/herself. • Bullying is aggressive behavior that involves unwanted, negative actions. • Bullying implies an imbalance of power. • Bullying typically involves a pattern of behavior repeated over time.

  25. What are the 4 Anti-Bullying Rules? • We will not bully others. • We will try to help students who are bullied. • We will try to include students who are left out. • If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.

  26. How is the program implemented at PEEBLES? • Class meetings are held each week in every homeroom. Students discuss topics related to bullying and learn ways to address bullying situations. • Positive consequences will be given when students report and try to prevent bullying behaviors. • Negative consequences will be enforced as part of Peebles’ Guidelines and Code of Conduct:
