  1. Welcome to First Grade! By Ms. Trillo, Mrs. Mills and Mrs. Hines

  2. Volunteering • help in the classroom during learning experiences (special events, celebrations) • work with individual students • work with small groups of students in reading, writing and/or math • be a Mystery Reader • Classroom Garden committee member • help students with gardening • LUNCH ROOM HELPER!!!! • prepare materials • __at your home • __in our classroom • attend field trips/fieldwork as a chaperone • attend trips to park • help students with dramatic performances • appear as a guest speaker to   • __share your job • __share your culture • __share a talent, skill, or craft • send in food, drinks, and other items for learning experiences

Math Expectations • By the end of first quarter your child is expected to: a) count by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s up to 100 and backwards by ones from 30. b) count from 0 to 100 and write the corresponding numbers. c) be able to identify common plane shapes with the number of angles and vertices. d) be able to identify common plane shapes in their environment. e) know the days of the week, months of the year, today, and tomorrow.

  4. Literacy Expectations • By the end of first quarter your child should be able to: • read the first 25 high frequency words. • read and comprehend a level 5. • write a complete sentence with capital letter and a period along with an illustration to match his or her sentence. • spell all studied word wall words correctly. • spell all words phonetically. • be able to read and story and make a connection – self to self; self to text and self to the world around them.

  5. Grading Policy • Your child is graded on a 7point scale: • 92-100 = A • 83-91 = B • 74-82 = C • 65-73 = D • 0-64 = NOT PASSING

  6. DISCOVERY FRIDAYS • We received a grant from PIA (Partner in the Arts) • This quarter the children will work in a group of diverse learners and focus on photography with photographer Mark Strandquist. • Each quarter the children will focus on different ways to share what they have learned: photography, dance, drama, and technology • For more information on Discovery Fridays please contact Anne Chamblin or Autumn Nabors. • annechamblin@gmail.com • autumn.nabors@patrickhenrycharter.org • For more information about our visiting artist, Mark Strandquist go to: http://www.nomovement.com/

Homework Expectations • All homework is due on Friday. • Please make sure your child has a quiet place to do his/her work along with the supplies to complete the assignment. • If your child is spending more than 20 minutes per assignment, please contact his/her teacher. • You can assist your child with his/her homework, but please try to let your child be as independent as possible. • Reading aloud 10-20 minutes each night is essential for your child’s reading growth.

  8. Behavior Expectations • We expect that each child come to school being his or her BEST self. • Using kind words with each other. • Keeping hands and feet to themselves. • Following classroom rules, procedures, and promise. • Doing his or her best to EXPLORE, QUESTION, DIG DEEPER AND LEARN!!!

Gentle Reminders • When sending money to school – please send in a sealed envelope with the child’s name and teacher’s name on the front. • If your child’s method of transportation for the afternoon changes, please send in a written note to the teacher. • If you do not wish to participate in our Community Snack, please let us know in writing ahead of time. • Please make sure your child eats a good breakfast in the morning before school. 80% of what your child eats for breakfast is needed for their brain to function during the day. • Please stop at the office first before coming to the room. You must check in! Safety First!

  12. How do I contact my child’s teacher? • Email is the best form of communication.
