4. ATTENDANCE • *Students may enter through the cafeteria at 7:30 if they are eating breakfast. Students not eating may enter the front or annex doors at 7:45. School begins at 8:00. *Tardiness interrupts our classroom. Please be on time. You will need to sign your child in at the front desk if they arrive after 8:00.

5. ATTENDANCE Continued • If your child will be out for at least 2 days, please contact me. Allow 24 hours for the work to be sent to the front desk for pickup. However, graded assignments must be completed at school.

7. DISMISSAL • A note or email MUST be sent to school if your child is going home a different way than their usual transportation. Please do not tell your child to “just tell the teacher”. • If you cannot be contacted, then we will send your child home their regular way. • Car and bus riders dismiss at 2:55. Walkers dismiss at 3:00.

8. ILLNESS – be sure your phone numbers (including emergency contacts) are current in case your child needs to leave school due to illness or injury

9. LUNCH MONEY • *We will collect lunch money in the morning. Please send your child’s lunch money in a ziploc bag or envelope with their name written or attached and also lunch # • *We encourage lunch money to be brought on Monday. • *However, lunch money will be accepted Monday through Friday. • If you are paying for charges, please indicate it on the envelope/bag.

11. BIRTHDAYS • You may send a simple birthday treat to be eaten in the cafeteria during lunch time. Please do not send whole cakes. • Party invitations my not be passed out at school unless all of the girls in the class or all of the boys receive an invitation.

12. Cell Phones & Supplies • Cell phones must be kept on silent mode at school. Teachers are not responsible for any theft or breakage of student electronic devices. • Our bookstore is open from 7:45 – 8:00. Your child has enough supplies to last them the entire year. However, they may like to buy some of the fun items to be used at home.

14. SCHOOLWIDE BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS • Students are to be responsible,respectful,safe, and prepared. Detailed expectations are taught the first few weeks of school and reviewed frequently. • Students receive tickets for good behavior. These can be from any staff in the school. Tickets may be redeemed for prizes and special drawings. Best Bear Behavior parties will be held quarterly.

EXPECTATIONS FOR ALL 3RD GRADERS • *copy homework and upcoming tests on binder calendar • *keep shoes tied – double knot if needed • *become more independent • *keep desk organized and don’t lose your work • *return notes to parents the next day • *check folder upon arriving in room to turn in needed items • *homework is turned in on time • *BEING RESPONSIBLE IS VERY IMPORTANT!

21. We try to have outside recess every day. We must stay inside when temperatures exceed 95 degrees or are below 35 degrees Fahrenheit. Please be sure your child dresses appropriately for recess!

22. COMMUNICATION • A weekly newsletter is given to students on Monday to keep in their binder all week. It is also available on my webpage. • Studentbinder – taken home daily and returned the next day • Monthly calendar – stays in the green VIP folder in binder. Students write down their homework and upcoming tests on this. • Green VIP folder – parents check this daily for homework and notes. Place money, notes, and homework in here to be returned

23. Communication cont. • Powerschool – online portal to view child’s grades. You will receive a code to use for powerschool. • Graded paper folder – is sent home on Tuesdays. Review papers with your child. Pull out any D/F papers and sign and return them. I don’t need the whole set back. Also sign on the dated sheet.

24. Communication cont. E-mail– I will send to all parents as new things come up or for reminders Interims – sent home halfway through the 9 week period to sign and return. Grades may rise or fall until the end of the quarter. If you view the graded papers and the online grades, then there should not be any surprises  when it comes to report card grades.

HOMEWORK *Primary goal is to develop responsibility and independent work habits *Secondary goal is to provide extra practice on skills taught in class *Bonus goal is that parents can get a nightly glimpse of what is happening in class *May be assigned every school night except Friday. *Homework is checked together for understanding. It is never taken for a grade.

27. Multiplication Facts Students will takeweekly multiplication quizzes. It is important that students memorize their facts during the first semester.A schedule of facts and dates will be provided.

Curriculum continued • Q3 - Native Americans, early explorers, Jamestown, 13 colonies • Q4 – TN history and frontier life, economics • We use “newspapers” called Social Studies Weekly – there is no textbook. An online link to the newspapers will be provided so it can be accessed at home. • Science: • We have a workbook/textbook combined. It stays at school. An online link to it will be provided.

Math: we have a workbook/textbook combined • Students keep a math spiral in binder for taking helpful notes in class. • Q1 - + and – review with regrouping, rounding, estimating, multiplication properties and strategies • Q2 - multiplication and division, 2-step word problems, telling time, elapsed time • Q3 – perimeter and area, locate fractions on a number line, comparing fractions, finding equivalent fractions • Q4 – measuring length, volume, weight, geometry

31. Curriculum continued • Language Arts: • Spelling– we will have 20 words every other week. Tests will be every other Friday. • Grammar – there is no longer a textbook, important grammar rules will be found in the plastic sheets in binder. Students will complete a daily review, with a quiz most Fridays. • Reading – we moved from weekly stories to novel studies. We have many great novels to read this year!

34. Bear Clubs • Time in the day that provides intervention for Reading and Math • All 3rd graders will work with all 3rd grade teachers along with Ms. Maharrey and Mr. Parrish • Students can move between teachers and tiers throughout the year.

35. RTI Teacher--Elise Maharrey What is RTI? - RTI is a multi-tiered system that uses testing data to identify specific student needs and match appropriate instructional strategies. Benchmark Assessments - Three times a year, each Ellendale Elementary student is given the AIMSweb universal screening assessment to determine his or her reading and math abilities. Based on the scores he or she will be placed into a Tier 1, Tier 2 or Tier 3 intervention group. Intervention groups - Each grade level has a daily 1-hour block to work on targeted interventions with each student. Physical Education(PE) – Mr. Marlin McKinney The 2018-2019 school year is upon us, and we have all sorts of fun activities planned.  The goal of physical education is to encourage students to develop a fondness for physical activity and to help them understand that exercise is a critical part of a healthy lifestyle.  At Ellendale, we teach/develop a wide variety of skills, activities, games, individual sports, and team sports. We also make an effort to integrate other subject areas, such as math, social studies, science, and language arts into our P.E. lessons. Students must wear tennis shoes to participate in P.E. class. If your child is ill or has an injury, please send a brief excuse note and I will find an alternate assignment for them. I look forward to a great year! 40. Visual Art- Mrs. Amanda Galbraith • What do students do in Art class? Students will not only get to work with art materials and processes such as drawing, painting, building, and discussing art, but they will also learn strategies for envisioning, working through challenges, and reflecting on their work. • How often will students bring home artwork? Students only get to come to art once per week for 45 minutes. It takes about 3 hours to complete most of the projects we do from start to finish. Therefore, we complete about one project per month. After projects are completed, I will display them in the hall or sometimes keep them for community art shows before they come home.

41. How are grades assigned in Art class? Students receive a conduct grade and an academic grade on an EGSNU scale. S represents satisfying the expectations for their grade level, G represents working through the entire process of envisioning, creating, and reflecting with minimal prompting, and E represents working at an advanced level. N and U represent that improvement is needed to meet expectations. • What should students wear to Art Class? Students should wear clothes that can handle studio-quality art materials because not everything we use will wash out easily. • Where can I find more information? English as a Second Language (ESL) -Mrs. Lucy Chapman As an ESL teacher, I work with students in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing to improve their English language skills.  These students speak another language at home or have English as their second language. They are tested to see if they qualify for ESL. Once in the program, an ESL student takes the WIDA test at the end of the year that measures their progress.  They transition from the program when they meet the exiting criteria on the test.
