  2. A landfill site is around the volume of Old Trafford and everyone lives within two Kilometres of some type of landfill site! Typical approximate time for waste to disappear: Nappy 500 - 600 years Cotton socks 5-6 months Styrofoam cup 1 million years Glass bottle 1 million years Leather belt 40 – 50 years Wooden block 10 – 20 years Banana peel 3 – 4 weeks Paper box 1 – 2 weeks Plastic bottles 1 million years Aluminium can 200 – 500 years Landfill sites in Lancashire Waste

The Contract • In March 2007, Global Renewables Lancashire Ltd (GRLL), Lancashire County Council and Blackpool Council signed what was then the UK’s largest waste Public Finance Initative (PFI) contract; a £2bn, 25-year agreement to process Lancashire’s household waste • The contract saw the provision of two 300,000 tonne reduce, reuse and recycle waste processing facilities • A facility in Thornton (near Blackpool) and a facility in Leyland (near Preston)

  5. Project Benefits for Lancashire • Diversion of over 75% of Lancashire’s domestic waste from landfill • 350 jobs created locally • Creation of their own power. Approximately 10,000 MWh per facility per year • 1,000 hectares of woodland and recreation areas created with 2,500,000 trees planted

Pre-Sort Area • Grapples in a pit area load hoppers with waste material to be transported by two conveyor belts into the Pre-Sort cabin • 16 Sorters per shift remove material from the conveyors • Pre-Sort is the part of the Operation which helps protect the system by removing items from the waste stream which do not fit in with the system. (Incompatibles, Hazardous, Bulky and Glass)

  11. Education Centre School Programme: A sky bridge from the education centre takes people onto a walkway through the plant. There are huge viewing windows overlooking the plant.
