All insects depend on plants. Fish, most birds, and many other animals depend on insects. • Plants also depend on insects for pollination. When an insect drinks nectar from a flower, it becomes dusted with pollen that it takes to another flower which starts reproduction. • Plants hold the soil with their roots and make oxygen for the stream life. Lodgepole Pine • The lodgepole pine helps the stream by giving shade which keeps the stream cool. Cool water holds more oxygen that stream life needs to breath. • The roots of the lodgepole hold the soil and keep the stream clean by not letting the soil fall into the water. • The trees also provide homes for many things including nests for birds and shelter for other animals. • Some Native Americans used the young trees as poles for their teepees. Willow Yarrow • Willows need lots of water and you can find them all over the streamside at Sagehen Creek. They provide many hiding places for animals. • The fast growing roots help to slow down erosion by holding the soil and keeping the water clean for the stream. • Native Americans used the willow for basket making. One medium sized cooking basket required several thousand willow stems to make. • Yarrow is one of the most common flowers around the streams and meadows at Sagehen. • The flowers attract insects and other animals that feed on insects. • Native Americans used yarrow for injuries. They crushed the leaves to put on injuries and they chewed the leaves to treat toothaches and headaches. ARC 2004 Summer Program Carlos Castañeda, Cristina Medina
